Santa Monica Pool

Being stuck in LA for the next five weeks, I wanted to play some pool. At least practice with Scrzbill and maybe beat him a few games. I went to a place in Santa Monica on Whilshire Blvd. No windows was the first sign this was going to be a good experience. Then when I walked in, one pocket on four different tables. I got a table and played around for a while. Then I asked about Kenny that I played in Mesa. He and I had a close match with me coming out ahead by a little. While I was asking about him, someone who was playing someone else, asked me to play. I agreed and he fininshed playing his match while I practiced. Have you ever had a couple of games where nothing goes right?Scratch. Miscue. Ball rolls out for the opponent. Scratch some more. That's what happened to the guy I played. I got every good roll and he got every bad roll. I won three games and he wanted to adjust. I told him I would if I found out the game was out of line. I called Kenny later that night and he said that the last time these two played, Kenny lost.
The main deal is, everyone was really nice and I felt like I was at my home court. The guys were amazing in their civility. If you want to find me while I am here, I'll be there. It's my home away from home in LA.
The other thing I found amazing was the interest in the $4000 added one pocket at California Billiards. Surprisingly, there were no flyers, just word of mouth. Plenty of players were excited about who was playing, how nice the
room was, and just having great tournaments on the Best Coast.
I would be interested if there are other players who have had the same experience in Santa Monica.:happydance::happydance:
 
House of Billiards is a very nice room.

Try table 1 near the jukebox if you want to play on my old table.

Yes, this is one of my favorite rooms in the LA area. I just don't get a chance to go there more trhan once a month. Lots of One-Pocket and some friendly folks in that place.
 
I had a good experience going to HOB as well. I was just shooting around but people were very friendly. There were a bunch of guys chillin on the rail as well, one of which was the former owner of the old Hollywood Billiards, whose name escapes me at the moment, but he was a really nice guy!

The guys on the rail are great. We both had the same experience. I will be going back soon, if nothing else, to give the guy I played a chance to win his money back.

That guy you beat was the best player in Santa Monica and you could give him 10/7 - so you could give the rest of the guys there 10/6.

It is a nice pool hall. However, it is a bit tiresome that almost nobody wants to play anything but 1 pocket there.

Sounds like a backhanded compliment. If it is the Rich I know from twenty years ago, he's a really nice guy. And a really great one pocket player. I was planning on getting some lessons from him since I have been off for almost nine years. As far as giving the guy I played 10/7, put up the money and I will give him the spot. Don't be disappointed when all the rolls don't go my way and he doesn't scratch three times a game. Three games doesn't tell anything. You can by me a Red Bull when I come in. You guys were very nice to me and I appreciate it. Being away from home is tough, it's good to be around nice people.

there's nothing wrong with 1 pocket. It's just that other games have merit too- especially 9 ball, 10 ball, and even 8 ball- but hardly anybody plays those games there. Oh well, very nice guys as you said.

Have you played Danny Shades yet? He is a solid 1 pocket player

I did and he had three of the worst games any player could have. Scratches, bad rolls, good rolls for me. I believe in nine ball, ten ball, and all the other games. My body doesn't have the stamina needed for nine, ten ball. The reason I got along with all the ole guys is because I'm an ole guy myself.

Danny can really shoot when he puts his mind to it. Perhaps he was sand bagging.

I went in last night, got a huge spot and lost and now Mr Shades wants 9/7. How do you lose in a game and lose a player on the rail at the same time? I even let out some shaft I don't have.
