Saturday: Semifinals of 2013 U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship

Haley and Hannah Berhman, Barry's grandchildren, sing the National Anthem.

Shane brakes the ball for the first game, a soft break. He knows the table well and knows exactly how it breaks.

Everything opened up pretty nice for Shane. 2 in the side. 3 in the corner. 4 in the corner. Shane's pace is a little slow. He studies the 4, thinking about his pattern. 4 drops. This is an easy runout from here.

You can hear a pin drop in the crowd when Shane is shooting. Smooth sailing for the South Dakota Kid.

1-zip. Shane in the lead.

Shane breaks soft again. Made the wing ball, but he doesn't have a good shot on the 1. Looks like he's going for a bank on the 1 cross-side. The 9 is further up the rail. He's going to try to make the 9 in the corner, but the 9 just rolled elsewhere.

4 in the side. Nice soft stroke. 6 in the corner. Perfect shape on the 7, with an angle, to get back up to the 8 on the opposite end rail. He pauses to chalk. He's taking his time.

Perfect position on the 8 in the corner pocket. Pockets it, and then pockets the 9.

Carbon copy of the first rack. Break and runout.

2-zip, Shane's favor.

Shane soft breaks again. Made 2 balls on the break that time. He's got a shot on the 1, but he will hit the 2 ball in the process, not knowing where the 2 will go. He makes the 1 and leaves a good position for the 2. He's in control.

En route to the finals, he took out Jason Shaw in the hotseat match, Chris Melling, Jeremy Sossei, Danny Matermaker from Richmond, Fabio Petroni from Italy, Omar Al-ShaHeen from Kuwait.

Shane is running out, but taking his time. He is not in a rush. He is cautious, being very careful with each shot. Looks like a machine running out. The cueball goes exactly where Shane wants it to go.

Poetry in motion.

3-zip, Shane's favor.

Jim Wych sends a shout-out to Jay Helfert on the West Coast.

Shane breaks beautifully. The balls just blossom, spread out for a good run-out.

There is a 40-second shotclock, and Shane just asked for an extension. If a player doesn't ask for it and the shotclock runs out, the extension is automatically applied.

Shane misses the 2, trying to break out the 5 and 9 which are clumped together. 2-ball is hanging in the jaws of the corner pocket.

Beautiful shot. Lee still has to break out this 5 and 9 somehow. He's shooting the 4 in the corner at the opposite end of the table.

He made a great shot. The crowd applauds. Being stuck in his chair for three racks, Lee Vann is taking each shot seriously. Slices the 5 in the corner. Looks like a Mickey Mouse run-out from here, with the 6 in the side, 7 in the corner. He didn't roll up as much as he'd like to pot the 8 in the corner, but he can see it okay. 8 drops. BEAUTIFUL speed to get perfect on the 9 in the corner. Before he pockets it, the crowd claps.

Corteza secures his first rack, thanks to Shane's missed 2.

3-1, Shane's favor.

Johnny Archer is the one who knocked Lee Vann to the B side. Archer crushed him in that match on one of the outside tables in the side rooms, 11 to 1.

Lee breaks, pockets 2 balls. This 1 ball is a real test of cuing. He had to raise the butt end of the cue and shoot down table towards the 1. It was make-able, but a tough shot. He missed it, but he leaves Shane bad.

Shane has got to be a little careful here. Shane made a good hit on the 1 and leaves Lee safe.

I think Lee can hit the edge of the 1. It might go in the right-hand pocket, but Lee overcut it. He played a safe if he missed. Good strategy. First-class safety play.

Shane back to the table. Shane misses the 1 ball with a no-hit. Lee gets ball in hand.

Lee pockets the 1 and looks as if he can run out pretty easily.

After Lee beat Jayson Shaw, Jim Wych spoke to Lee Vann. He asked him if the prize money affects the quality of the gifts he brings back home to his family. Lee nervously laughed. I saw the interview. I guess that was one of those so-called "filler questions."

Lee wins, 3-2. Shane's favor.

935 for Shane and 941 for Lee Vann on the Accu-Stats score so far.

Lee Vann struggling with the rack. Trying to get a tight rack. Shane sits patiently in his chair and can only hope to get back to the table soon.

Lee Vann has turned the tables on Shane. Breaking, hoping to get even with Shane. It was a really soft break. Pockets a ball, but the cue-ball is sitting in front of a corner pocket. He can see the 1, but it ain't easy.

Lee gets an extension. He hits the 1, but it leaves Shane a good view of the 1. Shane looks as if he might play safety, looking for a spot on the table to snooker Lee.

Lee might be able to see a sliver of that 1. Shoots and comes with a miss, a no-hit.

Shane gets ball in hand. Pockets the 1. Shoots the 3 in the corner. Goes for the 4 ball in the opposite corner. Beautiful shot on the 5. Slides the 6 in the corner. Perfect position on everything.

Shane 4, Lee, 2.

Shane breaks with his usual soft break. It seems to be working for him, so why not?

1 ball is sitting 3 inches from the corner, and the cueball is about 2 feet from it, up towards the side pocket. Shane looks as if he is going to kick at it. Great shot. A gutsy shot. The crowd erupts with cheers and applause.

Leave on the 2 ball isn't the best, but he can make it, a sharp cut in the corner. He is taking his time, and an extension was called by the referee after the 40 seconds expired.

He goes for a safety. He puts the 2 in front of the 9. Lee decides to try to kick at it, but he hit the 9 first.

Ball in hand for Shane. A 2-6 combo, then the 2. 4 leads to the 5. Then the 7, 8, and 9.

The pace of this game is so different than the one with Jayson Shaw. Much slower.

Shane 5, Lee 2.

Shane 5, Lee 2.

Playing for a lot more money than when he played Jayson Shaw

Lee comes with a dry break. Shane comes to the table, makes the 1. Shane studies the lay of the table now. Pockets the 2 in the corner pocket.

He got a little funny on the 3. He's going to have to shoot it a little harder than he'd like. Oh, he made a combo, the 3-7. Good shot. Rolls the 3 in the corner now. Here is the 4-9 combo. Looks pretty good. Makes it.

Shane 6, Lee 3,
