Saving the signature and date when refinishing a cue?

I would like to know if it is possible to save the existing signature and date on a cue when it's refinished? If it is not possible to save the signature could just the butt of the cue be refinished? The cue is signed on the forearm but most of the dings are in the butt of the cue. Any advice on this would be really appropriated..
Thank you!

I had Proficient Billiards refinish a Willie Hoppe model for me and, when finished, the signature was as crisp as when I sent it to them.

Most times the signature can be saved. Sand the cue but carefully but Just a light scuffing over the signature so the new finish will adhere properly. Sometimes if the finish has yellowed, there may be a yellow tint around the signature.

Agreed with Kim. Don't use much power as sanding the old finish layer. Just sanding thin enough. Hope you could do it as you need.

Sorry guys should have said that in the beginning. It's going back to the maker to be refinished. Was hoping he could save the original signature and date! Thanks for all the great input!

Sure. The cue back to cue maker is best way. But some cases, you could not send it back to cue maker, esp. from oversea with good stuffs.
