Say what you want about Earl......

You get the feeling these two men did not care much for one another....LOL

It's amazing how Fats stands almost straight up and he deadly accurate. Little concentration and very little focus but he could run a table at will. Looking at the video of these two great men playing makes me wonder about all the fundamentals that we work so hard on.

I guess they both just had God given talent!!

Rivalry

Rio,

Yeah, Fats never seemed to get down onna shot. My guess is he felt there was no need to(for him). These two played in the late 70's when I wassa kid. ABC would air/host the matches and put up a purse for ratings. (3 networks back then, thassit!) They would come on a sat. late in the afternoon, I would catch them just b-4 dinner. (Supper on the weekend was 5 pm SHARP! -- be there or missout :frown: )

I thought the rivalry was real. Willie despised "Fats," he thought he wassa phony. Others may know more than me bout that.

I never knew who to root 4. I liked Willie as he was a "tactician," while "Fats" liked the attention he got esp when he won cheese. "Fats" had an awesome feel for bankshots, that's why I liked him too.

Sorry, but I'm going to have to disagree with you on one point. Yes, Fats was a cocky s.o.b. and he could back it up, just like Earl. But, unlike Earl...

Didn't anybody else catch what Howard Cosell said right after Mosconi wins the 9-Ball match? Apparently Fats misunderstood the rules, but went along with it. Cosell said, "he was a perfect gentleman in taking the defeat."

Can you even imagine the sh!t f!t Earl would've throw in that situation?!? I can deal with a cocky s.o.b. because every now and then they lose and get deflated. But, a whiny, crybaby, sore loser is something nobody likes.

By the way, does anyone know if Earl Strickland and Phil Hellmuth are cousins?

Two dynamic personalities, that's for sure.
I would certainly enjoy seeing them play, especially if it could be against one another, but whether I could spend any one on one time with either of them remains to be seen. (It really remains to be seen since one of them is gone. Do you, by chance, know which one?) :)

Except when Fats was barking about playine 1P for a $1k a game, and Mosconi barked back he would play straight pool, 100 points for $100K... that shut up Fats a little :)

So, as usual, Fats can talk the talk, but Mosconi walks the walks... two diff players, two diff personalities, and two greats who promoted pool, but only one can call himself a Champion.... RIP Willie

PS: Kinda weird, but I thought that both guys were in their mid 70's watching this, but then the announcer says they are only 64 and 65.....

Jay,

Thanks for the link.

I wonder where that table is now.

I agree with ChicagoRJ. Mr. Mosconi was the real deal.

Fats was just Fats & very likable except by those he was not telling the truth, the whole truth, & nothing but the truth about. No one likes being 'slandered'. Especially a legitimate 15 time World Champion.

Regards &

Yeah Fats looks like he would have been a killer One Pocket Player. Its ashamed I am a little to young to remember this stuff being aired back then. I guess I was watching Thunder Kats or Voltron but I am thankful to the poster to giving us the link.

I thought they were both "gone" maybe I am misunderstanding what you meant

I guess you meant Earl and Fats I thought you meant WM and MF at first:o

I meant Earl, and Fats. Sometimes Earl is so far out there, he's long gone.

I'm going om memory now

If memory serves me well, Mosconi died in 1993, and Fats in 1996. Ironically that wudda put them about the same age when they died.

Rio,
"Fats'" game was 1 pocket, and Willie's was straight pool. They both reverted to their respective specialties when they got barkin' at one-another!
I liked it when Cosell seats "Fatty" down and says "this ain't Ali-Frazier," (ummm Howard,..... YES! it was !)

I am thankful to the person that posted this on U-tube ! :D Dunno how many times I had to emulate a bankshot for a friend that Fats missed while we waited for some good Kau-Kau !
