Sorry

Sorry for your loss, all of us true dog lovers in this thread understand, while others think it's silly.
I remember having my feelings crushed as a kid on 2 occasions when my 2 favorite dogs died. I cried and cried and cried some more.
Many years went by to where I didn't have that special bond with a dog, although my wife and I had a few during that time.
3 years ago though, my daughter bought a Yorkie and me and him bonded right out of the gate. My daughter let me and my wife have Cooper when she moved away to go to college. She new I'd be devastated if she took Cooper with her. Bless her heart for giving us the perfect gift. I hope he lives a long healthy life, because the emotions that you are going through right now are very depressing. Here's a toast to you and Valor. Hope you'll be reunited in the future and until then, cherish the memories. Cheers!

Thanks for all of the stories and support.

After all of the great stories and support, I don't quite know what to say other than thanks.

I take comfort in knowing so many others have been through this and we can all relate. My heart goes out to all that have lost a more than just a pet. The relationship and that special bond is what is missed the most.

I have yet to figure out if we train our pets or if they train us. Just like I would expect Valor to do certain things at certain times of the day, he would expect certain "rewards" in return and they had better be the right rewards or somebody wasn't happy..lol

Going through this, I would like to offer my experience as help for those who are facing the same decision in the near future.

Find a quality vet that "cares" about the patient. This is important because you know your loved pet will be treated with love and respect. My vet kept tabs on Valor over the last few months and offered guidance and advice.

Watch your pet's condition closely. Your pet will let you know when the right time comes. Discuss these expectations with your family and vet so everybody is on the same page with the decision. You don't want to go too soon, or worse yet, too late. The last thing you want is for your pet to suffer. We owe this to them.

Remember this if for the pet and not for us. To keep a pet that is in misery is just being selfish.

When you are setting things up with the vet, they will give you options. Please select the comfort option. This is a powerful sedative that works fast and puts your pet at ease before the final injection is administered. There is an upcharge for this....but WTF.

Stay with your pet the entire time. They have also earned this with all of the love and joy they have brought us during their life. You will not regret being there at the end.

The whole experience is over in less than an hour. Most of that time is waiting on the vet and time spent after the fact. The procedure goes fast and peaceful. Please make time in your busy schedule to allow for as long as you need.

Pay in advance so you just leave when you are ready without stopping at the front desk. Trust me, money is the last thing on your mind after the fact.

I like most Dogs better than most People I live around. The Dog I have now is 11 y/o, had her since 14 weeks. Hope she makes it another 11 years, but being realistic she only has a few left.

So sorry for your loss.

Dogs are the most majestic creatures on earth.

He looked just like my first dog Zigger.

Zigger was a flat coated retriever mix.

At some point, I plan on getting another dog. Anybody looking for a pet, please consider your local humane society. Valor was a rescue dog that we adopted. He was just a mutt, but, he was my mutt.

That's the only place I'll get a dog. Saving a dog from that environment or death is the only way to go for a regular old pet.

Mutts rule !

I say get another pup right away. Valor would want you to save a pup in need .... Guaranteed.

Sorry for your loss! You know there are some good people on this site. People that love dogs, are all right in my book! I have three myself. My daughter Amber is currently going to school to become a veterinarian technician. Remember the good times!

The main thing I have told friends, and even myself, after losing a cherished pet is that you must dwell on the fact that your pet, and specifically in the case of the op, his dog, Valor, landed in a truly terrific situation where he was loved and all of his needs were met with ease and pleasure.

Knowing that we have made a good home for our animals can lessen the blow just a little at such a sad time - it certainly has for me.

Sorry for your loss and I agree, as others have said, keep the happy memories close.

best,
brian kc

Good advice. Cindy & I give to the local no kill shelter. There are so many good pets looking for a home.

They sure have a way of worming their way into our hearts...

Dogs are better than most people. I feel your pain. Celebrate the many years of joy and companionship your beautiful dog provided you with.
