I like Allen Hopkins. I'm just putting out there opinions from amateurs and pro players that I've talked too and over heard speak about what was going on at the expo. It's not just my opinion I'm just the one putting it out there.

I can feel the sharks lurking in the waters. Be prepared because apparently youre an idiot for so many different reasons that you have never realized. Let me see if I can predict a few of what this will TURN into.

1. Who are you to judge how much money Allen makes?
2. Who are you to judge how to run a tournament? Whem was the last tournament that you ran?
3. Why are complaining about payouts, you didnt win and had no chance so why would it bother you.
4. You're a communist. (haven't seen this one yet, but dying to).
5. You just hate professional pool players.
6. You just hate Allen
7. You're the worlds biggest nit.
8. If you dont like it, them dont go.
9. You just want something for nothing.
10. Ive been on AZ longer than you. I know the billiard world better than you and you are not allowed to have a different opinion than me.

.

You forgot one:

11. poster must be a "Hopkins nut hugger"

IMO the Expo is more for league players than for top pros. I don't think the tournament is a big deal for the pros anyway. W/O Allen's name it would be not much bigger than Steinway's. Johnnyt

Here is the stark business reality......when attendance falls off........when the cue-makers & exhibitors dwindle.....SBE will change its fiscal approach........moderate price increases are of course expected and understandable.........push the envelope too far, and you will pay the price with future participation.

It sure sounds like there's some genuine grumblings about this year's SBE and its downward trend in payouts and increased prices.......If it persists, seems like SBE is going to encounter a shrinking population......hope not but something has to change or it's going to encounter problems......JMO.

Then don't go.. It's still the best event in the country every year. Every pool player either is there or wants to be there. Maybe you aren't aware but the first years of the expo allen lost money But had a vision and stuck with it. You do know all the people you see running the event get paid right? The expo doesn't give him that spot for free he has to pay for that. Did you talk to the venders? The economy isn't as great as you think. The reason cue venders are pulling it out is people aren't buying. they aren't making money so they're staying home. With all the work that goes into putting on this event I hope he goes home with a pocket full of cash. Honestly I don't worry about it.. I go... I enjoy a weekend of pool utopia and I leave looking forward to next year.
Your certainly entitled to your opinion but to all the people who don't like the event or the cost or how much money you think allen is making VOTE WITH YOUR WALLET. DON'T GO! I'll be there though happy to be completely surrounded by the greatest game on earth!

What is wrong with you???!!!!!
This is not the time nor place for a well thought out, logical reply!!!

See #8....

Rant on brother, youre entitled to your opinion. Just keep the lurking sharks from twisting it into something different.

# IF YOU READ THE PREVIOUS POSTS YOU WOULD HAVE SEEN THAT THEY PAYED OUT MORE AND HAD RECORD ATTENDANCE !!!

I thought it was funny that a guy wins the amateur event who a couple of weeks ago was going on all over Facebook that he was an elite pro and should get paid to be on pool streams.

This would be the only knock I'd have on the expo this year .

Place was immaculate. The action area was setup really nice with tables side by side, non players tended to be out of the area, and it was carpeted. My feet thank you Allen.

Amateur Open had 993 players....most ever. There's lots of happy customers that will be there every year we are lucky enough to have it.

What another horrible SBE. First off. Not many cue makers or venders like the old days. Second the payouts are horrible. Entry's go up but first place stays the same. In the amateur open first is $5000. Entry's went up and first stayed the same. When the expo first started first place was $5000. They only had a couple hundred players. Now they average 1000 players. You do the math!!!!! Then they have a pro one pocket tournament with only like four pros playing and some forfeited because of scheduling conflicts with other matches. Also first in that event was $1600 with a $225 entry. Wow!!! That's awesome. NOT !!!!!!!!! The worst part is how year after year pro bartable players are aloud to sneak into the AMATEUR open event Which most of the time one of them wins. It's just a real let down to see this happen. Players that have sponsors or win gambling with other pros or winning tournaments with other pros should not be aloud to play. That's why they have a pro am event also every year. And I'm not the only one complAining. I've heard it the entire weekend. And also what's up with the pro ten ball. Double elimination and then single with the last 8. That's a another great idea !!!! Wtf!!!! Just horrible!!!!

Kinda dumb. Let's do the math together. When I first went to the Expo the first line of cash was $400. Then $500. Then $550. This year it was $800. So a LOT more prize money is being paid out. The prize money has increased quite a bit. I like that.

As for the pro event complaints, I agree with you there. The format was broken this year. Badly so.

Overall the event was decent. Feedback is very valuable. But try to do a little bit of fact checking before you start throwing stones.

No sure about this, I've been there when I believe the number was like 11something

For years Allen limited the entries to the high 800's due to lack of available space for tables. With the new venue, space is no longer the issue and a full field of 1024 is possible. Sixteen brackets of 64 each. If you count all the unique entries, my guess is there were nearly 1500 players for all amateur events. Wow!

Shane Winters just won the Big Tyme event where he double dipped Orcullo to win it. Without even taking into account all the other big pro level bar table events he has won, placed top five, the Big Tyme event alone should disqualify him.

It totally looks like the SBE folks were asleep at the wheel to allow him to win the Amateur Open. The thing I read that is almost as unsettling as them allowing him into that event is some of the pros saying stuff on fb like "not his fault if they allowed him to play". Gotta take advantage if you can is the mindset.

I totally agree with all other things said about great payouts, a great event and I hope the event thrives and continues.

Dave,

One of these years we have to meet at SBE. I'm really old and can't see so I'll need weight  ;) :p .

Shane grew up here in Rochester. Remember watching him grow both as a pool player and a person. Have to agree he's as much a professional player as SVB. Still the entries don't drop so players still want to take their chances. I'd love to play Shane at SBE. I will never get a chance to play him for only $100 a set anywhere else!!!

There seems to be a lot of complaints, and on the other hand, a lot of people who were happy to be there. As always, there are some who would be complaining no matter what, and some who are happy with it no matter what. I say all that to say this-the worst advice we could give anybody is to vote with their wallet and stay home. I would guess Mr. Hopkins really wants to put on the best show he possibly can so that people will return next year. Mistakes are going to be made, but I'd bet if aired the right way, they get addressed. As for me, I say thank you to those working and running the event, and anyone else willing to put in the time and effort to have events like this. I hope they made a lot of money, and I hope I can afford to go to this event next year.

As of THIS post, you are entitled to your opinion and allowed to speak it!
No matter how much of the facts you DONT know,,, you are entitled to it!

What I like about these posts like yours is that it shows me the true nature of people!

People like you and most pool players are about one thing,,,,,,, ME,ME,ME,ME,ME,ME,ME,ME!!

There are people out there that love pool and want to be around a weekend of nothing but pool! This is a fact that I'm sure you will agree with. Before you open the hole under your nose and let $hit from inside your furry little brain out,,,, find out how much it costs to run these events! After you find out,,,, let us know! Till then,,,,, be well:)

How about a pros/cons thread about the sbe?

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but if a bunch of people who go to the expo year after year have the same gripe maybe this will open some eyes and possibly lead to changes for the good of everyone.

I think they should charge more for the tournament entry, and more for the general entry into the event.

Maybe this would drive away all of the crying broke people that can't really afford the event even if it was free.
