Sorry if this has been said before but I'm curious if the unique schön 5/16x14 threads are interchangeable. Are there any exceptions? Will any schön shaft work on any 5/16x14 butt? Will any 5/16x14 shaft work on a schön butt? I was looking at an OB+ shafts that had a small piloted joint, and a Mezz WD700 that had a huge piloted joint compared to the OB+. How would these affect the unique rounded schön joint connection?

What, if any, are the exceptions?

i would go flat faced, piloted joints are unique to the maker's shafts/joint connection. ive had shafts not fit on cues, its an expensive lesson.
 
The pitch or angle of some Schon, Black Boar , and not sure how many others . The older the shaft the more likely you need to be careful . Doing a couple thousand sets of j/ps , I have run into this . JIm

I do have many friends playing a Schon cue. The piloted on these shafts is too thick for other 5/16-14 joints.

BUT the other way round there haven't been any problems with putting any 5/16-14 shaft on a Schon butt. Vollmer shafts fit perfect, Mezz shafts also do (only sometimes they are just a little bit tougher to screw on, cause the Mezz pins are thin), and OB is no problem!
 
As I travel around, notice more and more players using the "Balance Rite" extension. Just to see what the fuss was about, I tried a 5/16 - 14 for my Schon. The unit screwed on to the butt. Not very tightly I might add. The shaft however will not screw on to the extension. Won't even start on. Double checked the sticker on the nub. Both my Schon's are over twenty years old. All eight shafts work perfectly fitting to the butt. The newest being about ten years old. Do the newest Schons use a different pin?

The Schon 5/16 x 14 pin is actually a bit smaller in diameter than 5/16" and so is the threads in the shafts.
What that means is that a standard 5/16 x 14 shaft will screw on the Schon butt and a Schon shaft will not just screw on any other makers 5/16 x 14 butt.
As far as the outer diameter of the brass insert on the shafts go, you will probably have to measure that with a pair of calipers to see if it fits, if you are going to put another makers shaft on a Schon butt or go with a 5/16 x 14 flat face joint.

Thanks. Just checked at PoolDawg. On the site, it mentions the unit will NOT fit Schon cues. Going to try a 3/8 - 10 on my Carmeli instead. Taking the cue back to Vegas in December anyway.

The original schon pin was .308 x 14 - yet another non-standard thread.

I'm pretty sure there is a bigger "nipple" on my Schon Predator compared to other 5/16 X 14 shafts...

Yes Thanks! I'll admit I've been lurking. Pretty new to the game so I'm minding my p's and cues.....
 
It's not just Schon, others have non-standard threads despite standard-sounding descriptions.

Recent McDermott 3/8 x 10 shafts don't fit on older butts. There was a change in pin suppliers at some point which has made the difference.

My 2008 year I2 shaft will fit on a McD cue made in 2007, but if fits too tight on a D4 cue made around 1984-86.

Despite the shaft's plastic thread insert, on the D4 it fits so tight that I don't bother trying to get it screwed down all the way to the bottom.
 
I have an older Schon that you can find in the gallery. I picked up a grey stained STL-1 for bar play. Only one of the original shafts would screw on this butt.

I have a Jacoby Hybrid shaft with the Schon joint and it fits on both cues perfectly.
