Schmelke Cues_Made is USA _Great Company

I bought a few feet of melamine rod for ferrule material, from David Schmelke.
I gave a stick to one cuemaker who said it was the best ferrule material he has ever seen.
We just replaced a ferrule on a Searing shaft with the same melamine rod.

LOL, I bought one of mine in person also,(I was over-the-road truck driver before retiring). They are fantastic cues, and I own Andy Gilbert,Rick Howard,Schon,Pechauer,McD D-series,Meucci Originals to compare them to. The low price of Schmelke is just a bonus !!!

What kind of material did you replace and was it for sure the ferrule installed by Dennis?

Listen, let's kill these Schmelke threads, you got that? How am I supposed to have a decent inventory to choose from when I visit the shop in Rice Lake camping every summer? Just look at this junk that I get stuck with buying from them because you people wipe out the inventory.

Look at their wood selection--it's all gnarly and twisted--who wants to buy this crap? That blank is from last summer--the points are all filled up with knots and twists--these people have no idea how to construct a blank--and then to charge $55 on top of it--they oughta be ashamed of themselves!!!

The one on the bottom. Wood type? And top blank.... Forgetaboutit

Philosopher......with no disrespect intended towards either Schmelke nor yourself....you must have had
the worst 5 -6 cues Tim ever produced. The difference between these two is so enormous it's ludicrous.

JMO.....

Not in ball pocketing... the ball does not care what puts it in the hole. I cold make any ball with my Schmelke that I could make with my Burton Spain. The ball cares more about my stroke being straight and consistent so I don't put any unwanted spin or squirt on the cue ball. Though, one is more collectable and went up in value and the other will not. But I got lucky, when I got the Spain when I was 17 I had no idea that it was going to increase in value, only liked the way it looked and got a good deal on it ;) Who knew he was gonna be a HOF cuemaker at that time ???

Those are horrible, make them go away... they don't have designers names, how in the world could you ever make a ball ;)

Bottom one is my Schmelke dream cue--my first trip to Schmelke and I bought that one off the wall for $78 or something very near to that. 18.2 oz. and 18.5" balance point. I only have 6 shooters and 5 of them weigh between 18 and 18.5oz., so this is spot on in terms of specs for me.

David said it was just a funky rosewood--I don't know why it is the way it is--disease, mold, whatever, but its not totally uncommon to find stuff like that in a bulk rosewood shipment apparently. But this was one of the best four or so in his time running the shop that he said survived making it through to the completed cue stage. Remember, we're talking Schmelke here, so it is just plain old wood--no stabilizing or anything like that.

Should you ever get a chance to go to the factory showroom, be sure and take a look in the junk bin--some of the most astounding blank failures you will ever see. My other goal when I go is to find one astounding junker and bring it home just to add to my blank collection--most are way beyond salvaging for cues, but some are as close to psychedelic natural wood as you'll ever see.
Thankfully I do not live near the Schmelke shop. My wife said one more cue and she will take everything and leave. I would miss my Schmelke cues.

Ya got me on that point.....I have never owned a SP cue by any cue-maker, especially Tim Scruggs.
I have never played with one of Tim's SP cues either. However, I have played with more than a dozen
Scruggs cues in my life and owned several. I was comparing those cues & the one I decided to hang
onto, with Schmelke cues in general & Tim's cues just leave Schmelke in the rear view mirror......JMO.

Does that mean that any time someone posts up a Tim Scruggs cue people need to
start comparing him to Dennis Searing when there obviously is no comparison.

"Gee my Barry is better than your McDermott"

?????? Sure why not.......I still don't understand why Dennis Is so revered versus other great .cue-makers too many to mention.

And yes, I have examined Searing cues but only played with a Searing cue for a one solitary game of straight pool (150 points).

Anything...cues in particular..... can be compared & deservedly so too.....the contrast sometimes can be very stark or perceptibly slight.

We can explore our differences off the Forum via PM to avoid side-lining this thread any more than it already has.....which I have contributed to.

Precision, attention to detail, 16 to 1 valuation (or more)
But as you know tributes are the new production cue, only cornier.

Just curious ....why do we compare cues. What does one cue have to do with the other. Especially if it's a daily player. I understand collectibles. But what does a Schmelke have to with a TS or any higher end cue.

Some people are so brainwashed that they can only appreciate a cue by comparison to the cues other people tell them to appreciate and pay out of the nose for.

That's fine as long as people don't keep trying to brainwash others into believing a cue is something that it isn't.
How many times do you try to ram a couple of corny tribute cues down everybody's throat, day after day.

Thanks to the original poster, I decided to pull the trigger on a Schmelke cue today. M20 Bocate, I decided to keep it pretty simple and basic. I never knew you could get a made in the USA cue for so cheap. I love supporting family businesses and I know I will love this cue, It's a whopping $120 and I should have it in four weeks. Most of the options were cheaper via my phone in order compared to the online website pricing. They were very helpful.

.

I visited Rice Lake, WI a few years back and ordered ebony, purple heart, and cocobolo two piece sneakies. They all hit nice, although the ebony is my favorite.

I also bought a set of bocote one piece house cues from Schmelke back when they still made them. They have all remained straight and have pro tapers. Great cues for the money and made in USA!!!.

Congrats: Put on a good tip and use some good chalk, and you'll never need another cue ;) My tournament cue is a plain jane Schmelke being held together with Gorilla glue because I dropped it on a concrete floor. Never take my WIllie Hoppe to tournamnets..... don't want it to grow legs ;)
