Schmelke Sneaky

Long story short. I had ordered a Schmelke sneaky with several custom features. This is a great way to go for people on a budget. In my case, I have other sneakies, but I wanted to see what type of quality I would get on a custom order from Schmelke as they supply most of the custom guys with full splice blanks, and they are very reasonable, and still made in the USA ;) . I specified a 59" cue, 19.5 oz cocobolo, with a birdseye forend at extra cost, a 3/8 X 10 pin with no collar, and a 12.75mm shaft. The birdseye forend is very nice, and the cocobolo is what you would hope for from a custom cuemaker, really nicely figured but not quite spectacular. They use a LBM ferrule standard now, and that's a plus in my book. I just let them put their standard soft tip on as I really didn't like their selection and I planned to change it later. The cue has a 12" Pro taper and it's exactly what I prefer. Very similar to my Dayton or Jensen cues and should hit medium stiff without binding during the follow through.

The cue is really sweet, but here are my only criticisms. The base cost is about $110. They charged $20 more for a 59" length, and that's my preference, but I think $20 is a rip for one inch extra length. The BEM forend was $20 extra too, as opposed to plain maple. It's very nice and well figured but the spray is dark on the forend, and there doesn't seem to be any on the back of the shaft, so there is a huge color difference that is noticable. The shaft is what I would say is grade -A, not AAA but altogether very acceptable, actually very nice straight grained wood. There is no sugar or mineral streaks and only a little grain run out. My complaint about the shaft, an oversight I'm sure, is that it's 13.75mm when it was supposed to be 12.75mm. I know that they would be only too happy to turn the shaft down but I think I'll make a break cue out of it. The cue feels great to me. It's balanced perfectly and I somehow think that I'd break well with it, being 13.75mm and all. I figure that I need an extra hard tip like a Water Buffalo, a Sumo, or a Tiger break tip. The cue cost me $155 plus shipping, and if I did it again I might try the standard length and forend for $110. Either way it's a bargain. You can get cocobolo, bacote, or rosewood, and I think ebony is a big chunk more, like $40 maybe ?

I'm remiss in not having pics for this little review, and I haven't actually hit any balls with the cue yet. I'm confident that it would play great with that pin and wood to wood joint anyways. Most players would like it but you can get other joints if you choose. I think this is a great alternative for someone who wants somthing better than one of those $18 Terminators, and who doesn't want a Chinese cue either. This is really a nice sneaky ! I hope this helps someone...Tom

I ordered one for a friend, a custom 65" cue for less than 200$ is hard to beat. I also had a chance to hit some balls with it and I must say the cue plays very well.

I don't think $20 for an extra inch is out of line at all, alot of cuemakers charge alot more than that for special length. Ask Joey Gold how much he'd charge for a 59" cue lol

No kidding, for the 65" total length, it was 30$ extra If Im remembering right, that is a steal compared to what other cue makers would charge, if they would do it at all.. What was amazing to me is that the cue was perfectly straight, the tip size was exactly 12.5mm, and the weight was exactly 21 oz as ordered, I checked lol...

You haven't hit a ball with it yet? I'd love to hear how you feel about it when you've used it. I hope it feels as good as it looks.

Ask and you shall receive! Just call them on the phone and tell them what you'd like. Most likely they'll be only too happy to oblige you.

I just called and talked to a customer service rep named Steve...1-800-850-8832. They'll do almost anything that you could ask for. On the page that has parts and supplies for cuemakers, they show many different blanks and forends. Those are all available for a custom cue, along with any type of taper or mm etc...Tom

You can also choose any of these options here
just click on one model and there are a lot of options to choose.

I've never had ordered any material from them. A friend of mine did it and I just find that the shipping price was a bit high for international order.

Hope it's help.

I am also a big fan of Schmelke Sneaky Pete cues. I am a dealer of Schmelke cues, so I hope that my opinion is not considered biased. I decided to post because I believe that the Schmelke Sneaky Pete cues are among the very best deals in the industry.

Where else can you find a high quality cue with exotic woods, excellent workmanship, very good quality shaft wood and custom options for anywhere near the price. I also love that they are made in the USA. The Schmelke Sneaky Pete cues start at $95!

We expanded our line of Schmelke Sneaky Petes. They are now available with bocote, rosewood, purple heart, cocobolo, bloodwood, kingwood and tulipwood. We recently had one made with cocobolo, birdseye maple, black phenolic joint and butt cap with a radial style pin. The cue is gorgeous!

Options include: weight, shaft diameter, tip selection, 7 joint options, shaft options (hard rock or laminated), cue length, pearl rings or butt cap and engraving. These are truly custom options. There are even options to match up a Predator or OB-1 shaft.

Schmelke cues are highly under-rated!

Greg,

I know that ebony was an extra charge from Schmelke, $40 if I remember correctly, but is it still available? As reasonable as these cues are, many may want to order ebony even considering the extra charge. Thanks for adding info to the thread.

Did you and Paul like the lane-splitting video on Youtube ! How is Paul liking his new bike ?

Schmelke are the best deals around...

I also ordered one for a female friend's birthday. It's her first cue and I ordered with custom settings. Longer pro taper....thinner butt, 19.5 oz for her smaller hands. Personally i love playing with sneaky petes and have a Tim Scruggs. I also own a custom schmelke. Where in the world are you going to find a custom sneaky at such a low cost? Scott did a great job taking my order and I'm excited for her. They are by far the most under rated and cost effecient cue maker in the country.

On the side note..i've talked to a few other custom cue makers who all agree that schmelke builds a great sneaky pete for a great price.

Schmelke..keep up the great work.

Our not having a Schmelke Ebony Sneaky Pete is an oversight. I just ordered one so I can take the picture and get it online. We will be selling it for $129.00; so it will be $34.00 more than the standard Rosewood, Purple Heart or Bocote Sneaky Pete which we sell for $95.00. We can custom order anything from Schmelke. Always feel free to call to discuss or design your Schmelke cue. Obviously, there are more actual options available than we can post on our site; like butt diameter, wood combination, etc.

The lane splitting video was INSANE! We watched the entire thing! Paul's new bike is truly sweet! He loves it! With the drought we've had, I think today is the first day since he got it that he didn't ride to work!

Well, that is interesting, but the BCA rules state cues can only be 63" maximum. Wonder if anyone ever called him on 'illegal' equipment in a tournament?

roughly how long does it take for schmelke to make a sneaky after u order it?

It varies. An average sneaky with not too many options, a week, but one like the one I ordered, a month. Why not call, tell them what you want, and let them tell you. I can tell you this too, they are faster than their estimates...Tom

yea i just wanted to get some info before i actually call them, im not looking to get something done right this minute anyways so i wasnt in a rush to figure out all the details. this thread has been a big help tho.

We get a lot of sales of custom Schmelke Sneaky Petes. In my experience, te lead times vary from 1-3 weeks depending upon the complexity of the cue. We typically drop ship the cue from Schmelke directly to the customer.

I just got two in on custom order for sale if anyone is interested. Both cues have Uni-loc joints. Have one cocobolo with BE maple, one rosewood with BE maple. Both cues are 13mm, 19 oz. The cocobolo butt is a slim taper due to the lighter weight. I'm selling the cues for $150 each with your choice of tip and ferrule. I bring them in without ferrules so that I can put on either a phenolic style ferrule or Titan, and the customer's choice of tip. I can even make them into break cues. This is my last time ordering the Uni-locs, though, as the $35 extra charge isn't really worth it, IMO.

If anyone is interested in either cue, send me a PM.
