I believe it's pronounced as KaRa-O-Ke, or Foksvagen in Geman!

I swear ive posted on this topic before, but baisically it doesn't really matter how it is supposed to be pronounced. Because I pronounce it the right way, and people look at me like im crazy, so just keep pronouncing it shawn or shown, and people will know what you are talking about. Fwiw, Jude has the correct way in his thread. Shoeun but make the 0 long.

It's actually 2 words put together.

Kara which means empty and Oke which is short for Orchestra....

Empty Orchestra = Music without words

The pronunciation is difficult to explain but I'll give it a shot

The Japanese A sound is similar to the way we pronounce the O in hot. You have to roll the R a little bit, like a soft D, and the last part is pronounced like OK.

Ka ra o k

It's right there in the spelling....Karaoke. It makes me wonder where western people got the Y sound in the middle. I can understand messing up the ending but the middle of the word baffles me. hehe!!

As of a couple of minutes ago, it's pronounced Shawn per the kind folks at Schon.

I sent them an email asking for the correct pronunciation. They did mention that it was incorrect in German.

Nuff said!!!

The word schon in German has an umlaut over the o. It's pronounced scheun and means 'beautiful'. "Es ist sehr schon." Loose translation; ( It is very beautiful). I sold my Deutsches keyboard when I left school so I can't put the stinking .. over the necessary vowels to spell it gramatically correct.

Correctamundo!

When I spoke with them them, I asked them to clear up the mystery and they told me it is pronounced as follows:

Sh aaahhh nnn

The "Sh" is easy for anyone. The "aaahhh" is pronounced as though you have finally just understood something someone said. And the "nnn" is just "n".
Don't know how clear that is but hope it helps.

Just one other example is that some people pronounce "on" as awwwn and some pronounce it aaahhhnn. Well Schon is pronounced using the latter. (Not sure that helped either) LOL

Now what's the sense behind using the umlaut-O (fwiw, if the keyboard or software lacks this capability, it's officially replaced with oe) in their logo? :(

Everyone that I know always says it like "shon" which rhymes with don. I like to say it as Shawn. If it really is pronounced that way, their slogan can be "You can't go wrong with a Schon!" lol.

i thought it was pronounced much like the word "chair".

Whoops, that would be Yiddish, not German. (Disclaimer: This is not implied to be in any way racist. Yiddish is a language with german roots and slavic influences.)

In Yiddish, the pronounciation of diacritics has changed in deference to the slavic influences, and Oe is pronounced like Ae. The chair is a quite good example of the pronounciation.

John, That's even a better description of how to pronounce it. Rhymes with "Don".
You're not too far away from me in Delaware John. Do you have a Schon, John. :D

How is "Schon" correctly pronounced when it refers to the cue brand? Most people pronounce it equivalently with "Sean/Shawn," however this is not the correct German pronunciation which should roughly rhyme with "earn."

How does the owner of the company pronounce it? How do German speakers pronounce it?

thanks

I'll ask him when I see him at league on Tuesday. The owner of Romines also owns Schon cues.
