Here is a Schon SP I bought. I wanted to love the cue to death, but I couldn't put my finger on why not.

Then I realized I wanted an old school looking cue. Originally I was going to purchase an STL4 and get a white/green spec linen wrap on it. But with the cost of purchasing a new cue, and selling this cue, the price difference wouldn't be worth it. It'd be far too little profit for downgrading in design.

Then I just thought "Why not change the leather back to linen on this?" I know people don't usually step back, but with the leather, it was generic looking. It was a great job and very nice, but it just kinda left the cue dull.

I enlisted a buddy locally here to install linen on the cue. He also advised me to keep the leather, but my heart was set. I'm glad I made the jump. I'm very happy with the cue now and it seems like I have a little more feedback with the linen! (maybe that's in my head, but I'm enjoying it thoroughly.)

Now it's got that old school look and i'm absolutely in love with it. I have an old McDermott box case purchased from here that matches the cue as well.

I have two cues with leather wraps but the rest are all linen.
Nothing feels as great as a nicely done linen wrap. And for
nostalgia and that old school look, there isn't any substitute.

Looks better in linen.Good choice.
I think leather deadens the feel due to it being thicker then linen.

Update: Found my Dream Shaft

So slightly reviving this, keeping with old school, yesterday was shooting pool with a buddy here at one of our old pool halls. We were talking about schons and shafts (I have a Vantage w/ Schon pilot coming), and the cue repair guy said "I have schon shafts. I have a micarta one. 13mm"

I about dropped everything. "No way" "Yes, want to see?"

He goes in the locker, pulls it out, sure enough. 13mm, no logo but telltale schon pilot, yellow as the sun micarta ferrule. While not new, it was in great condition and straight. Finding a full 13mm Runde Era Micarta shaft seems rare nowadays. Then I asked him the price. Then he told me, then i bought it on the spot because hot damn was it a deal. Weight it at home and it's light (4.02oz). With the butt, the total cue is 18.6oz. For comparison, the stock shaft is 4.5oz, so about 19.2oz total. I think the Micarta shaft feels more balanced.

Between the wrap and the shaft, I think i'm done with my cue searches since I have my old school (albeit round pointed) player
:grin::grin::grin:

Anyway, seems the iphone's camera is garbage, but here are pics. It had a poorly installed Everest originally. I absolutely hate that tip. Installed an elkmaster instead.

Dog demanded to pose next to cue because he's an attention hog.

That micarta shaft was a hell of an add! Well done. I bet she plays really nicely.

I didn't know Bob's early Schon shafts were hard to find.
My '85 Schon has three (3) orig shafts with Micarta ferrules
two are still new & unplayed after > 33 years (maple stitch rings)..

i prefer linen for myself,i like the looks and feel of leather too

but linen has a feel i remember from the 60s

overall nice looking cue for sure
