Schon vs Custom cues

Serval years ago a friend traded me cues and gave me his Helmstetter...I loved that cue. Shot lights out with it...In a weak moment I traded it away. Bought 4 more Helmstetters after that and liked none of them....
Then a few years ago in Vegas I bought a Jerry Olivier cue. I loved that cue. Hit a ton..Won lots of money with it.
Sold it to have Jerry make me a custom cue of my design and I hated the hit of the new one....
Owned two Predator cues and liked none....Bought a Predator 2 in Vegas and loved it...
Tried a friends Coker and loved it so bought a Coker and I love that cue.
Point is.......Each cue has its own hit and personality...You might not like the next Schon you get. Or you might love it.

I feel it is hard to order a cue by name, but you need to hit with the cue first.....Someone says," get this brand or that brand".....But thats the cue they like...You might not....Its a tough decision....I know......

Not trying to hijack the tread, but I have a question . Does anyone know the diameter on a schon butt; and have they always been that size? I have 2 predators with different sized butts, but prefer the schon /314 combo. Does anyone else like this combo? Thanks in advance, kennyratt

Mine is .840 at the joint, 1.005 begining of wrap, 1.190 at end of wrap, 1.285 at the end of butt cap. The tip is 13.2mm LOL It's a very late 80's or early 90's R7.

I've heard it mentioned that Schon is not always consistant on their butt diameter. I haven't a clue if there is any truth to that unless I took my calipers and measured a few.

One reason I like em is my shaft are a very strong taper but the butt is a tad small. They are a small butt cue although I'm fairly sure there are smaller.

It would be nice to know what every cuemakers butt diameter is as std production. That's cue butt not their fat as*. LOL I don't know why this seems to be of little importance. The sellers should offer this info but I rarely see this happen. If you buy golf clubs they measure your hand. Anyone who's played any golf at a decent level know what size of grip they prefer. It should be the same with cues.

More than you asked for and sorry to hijack this thread with my reply but I think the guy has made a decision anyway.

Ok, i am in kinda a situation where i cant make up my mind over what kinda cue, i wanna buy.

Now i have had a Schon before and have been wanting to get another ever since i got rid of the one i had :(

On the flip side, i have been looking at other custom cues, like Jacoby, Gilbert, Coker. I will say i want a SS joint.

Now I am kinda curious as to what other people have done when they are divided over a couple cues when they are looking to buy one. Do you go with a cue you had before and really liked, or venture into uncharted waters with a brand new cue that you've never played with before.

I know alot of people Rave about Schons even though they are consider'd a Production cues, but could be classified as a semi-custom cue. So its one of those situations where i am almost 90% sure i should just drop the $ and buy a Schon and be done with it. lol

If it helps with your decision, just look at how many tournaments Johnny Archer and Shannon Daulton have won when they played with Schon cues! Johnny switched to a Scorpion cue because of sponsorship and i'm not sure what Shannon Daulton plays with now, but the IPT list says he's back playing with a Schon cue. I've owned Schon cues and they played great IMO, but I own 2 custom cues now and I like them a lot so I guess it's all in what you want and how much you want to spend that will make up your mind.

StormHotDog and Rackem

As I previously posted, I had my Schon for 20 years and loved it. The only reason I had a cue made is I wanted something Shon would/could not do, greater length. IMO, having something special done to your cue is the only reason to buy a custom, have it customized.
Rackem,
I believe anytime you let a player make the rules, he will bend them to his own advantage and howl like a banshee if anyone points out that fact. Mike S. is the main influence behind the IPT rules, so take that for what it is worth. I do not know about length restrictions for BCA and others and at the risk of sounding arrogant, I do not care. 99% of the time I play for myself . If I do sub for someone on leagues, it is very seldom. Personally, I haven't played on leagues much because there seem to be a lot of rule nitpickers and it is interesting to me that most of them (the nits) cannot play a lick.
Not trying to offend anyone, just my opinion.

i will tell you.. the big differences with schon and custom cues are that schons do not hold their value and arent a cue that can be considered a good investment.. schons are great cues, i have used one for many years and always loved them.. but i will tell you, as time goes on, you gain an appreciation for things that are hand made and not done on a machine.. my biggest problem was owning a cue that 10000 other people could have.. my last schon was an ltd and i never ever saw anybody with another one.. it was a 1800 retail one that i paid 1400 for and when i sold it, i was only able to get about half that for it.. it really hurt to sell it that cheap but i bought a paul mottey and i love having that 10 fold what i liked about the schon.. the best part is , the mottey if i sold it today, i may even make a few bucks or atleast get what i paid for it and i used it.. schon has made so many cues, they are starting to make some ugly ones.. but you know every maker makes that ugly cue..lol.. i say, you can never go wrong with buying a schon and they make great stepping stones when your ready to move up to something custom... nothing like the feeling when you design the cue yourself and somebody makes it by hand... but thats all just my honest opinion..

Schon or Custom? If you like Schon and you like Schons hit, Buy a Tascarella.

Petes cues hit like a super charged Schon and they will never loose their value.

You can purchase one of Pete's cues from him directly or on this Forum, if you would like his number PM me.

What part of "A stick is ONLY as good as the person using it" do people not understand?

If I had a Dollar for everyone I knew who owned a $1000.00+ cue and couldn't run a rack with it, I would be rich and retired....

Schon builds a fantastic stick, and for a Non-Custom, they hold their value well. I say Non-Custom because they are a far cry from a production cue.

Their buid quality is fantastic and their hit is recognizable as being a fantastic playing cue, no matter if it is a plain jane or a high end LTD Schon, they all hit the same, NICE...

Get what you like and shoot with it....

Most people play with a Predator shaft on what ever Que they have and a Predator ruins the hit of anything, so what does the butt even matter....

All a high end cue is, is Bragging materials and a conversation starter for most.

1 guy on my league has a Mottey I personally think hits like junk, another guy has a Kikel which plays almost as good as a house cue with a bad tip and I know of 2 Bludworths so warped they look more like a Compound bow than a cue.

Schons play good and look good, and with Evan Clarke behind them they have the best Customer satisfaction and support one would ever ask for. I've had quite a few conversations with Evan and he will bend over backwards to accomodate anyone passionate about the game and their equipment.

Give me one good reason a $5000.00 Custom plays better than a Schon???

You can't as it is ALL about feel and little about looks. Unless you're one of the non-rack runnin fickle dudes that wanna sit around and talk about their cue more than stepping up and runnin a few racks....
