School. Hone your skills later. Hopefully you'll hone them well enought to hit the big tourneys...including the U.S. open, while being one of the few who doesn't have to sweat blood hoping to cover your expenses.

When I am finished with my masters I will be 35/36, and I will have a lot more time in order to practice, and play in tournaments etc.

I know for most pool is just a hobby, but one day I would like to actually become a BCA instructor. So I am just curious what most people would advise in here?
Playing pool through college can be done, and it can be a good outlet. But keep your eye on the prize. There is no reason to sacrifice the future for a little fun today. Although pool is a great hobby, it is just that - and shold never take priority over things that have real value, like paying the bills, having meaningful relationships, spending time with family, etc.

And don't fool yourself about having more time in the future -> as you get older you will have to reevaluate your priorities periodically. When you get a job in your career field, have a family, and further evolve as a person, you may still enjoy pool, but you may find different (and often better) ways to spend your free time, which you will have less of...

Besides, you never know where you'll be in 5 years. Heck, you may have had enough pool and hang up your cue.

Focus on school, play pool when you can - but don't get sidetracked.

The way things are today you can't get enough education. Finish school, get your degree. I played my best pool in my late thirties and early forties. Get in a position were you have established yourself in a good field and your finantially secure. then you can dedicate the time you need to play the game. Don't run away from the game, just know you have a plan, to get as good as you can get, after you take care of your education.

I often brought my cue to class when I was in college but when crunch time came around, I'd go weeks, sometimes months without playing. I can't emphasize this enough - what you do right now in school can dictate how comfortable you are for the rest of your life. Go to school. Do well. When that's done, you can do whatever you want. Take a couple years off for yourself and play your heart out but get that degree.

Great advice. Unfortunately, a lot of people will not take this advice. I have a buddy and he is a really good player, but never graduated because he played pool all of the time. I played in school, but made it out in 4 years and now play pool most of the time because I can afford my own table. Go to school.

Well I am just curious what people's advice would be on this! LOL

I love to play pool, and if I had the time I would practice every single day!
I run a league every week, and I work, and I do online schooling with UOP.
However I have been finding that my game has been lacking as school and home life are taking up more of my time recently. I am currently working on my Bachelors and I want to also get my Masters.

Here is the question that I am curious as to what people in here would say.
Would you focus on school, and work right now and put pool on the back burner? In other words would you settle for your league once a week until you got school finished?

Stick with school.... period. Pool will always be there forever, but it would be to the best of suggestions to finish off with your schooling first. Then while you maintain your degree, find a suitable job, and a nice house, then aim to start playing again. I acutally had a similar post here, perhaps you might want to take a look at it.

Think of it this way, if you go to school, get the degree and come out making good money, not only will you be able to pay for table time without making a dent in your wallet, but you will also be able to afford a nice table, and all sorts of high end cues :D

Pool is a grind. Trust me, the top players in the world are not financially secure. I got 3rd at Valley Forge in March, beat Souquet, Hillbilly, and lots of champions. Went to work with my dad the next day when I got home, LOL. Got 5k and of course, that all goes pretty quick on bills and expenses. Stay in school buddy, Im doing that too. Good luck whatever you decide, its your call though...

Thanks!

Thanks for all the replies! Sometimes you just got to hear from everyone else that you are on the right track in life, and that you are doing the right thing. Know what I mean?

I am scheduled to have my Bachelors by the end of 2010, and I should have my Master's by the middle of 2012. It seems so far a way, but yet it is really coming fast.

Anyway, thanks for all that posted and responded! :D
