Scotch doubles

I like it, force's a team to play like a TEAM. It's not the same as playing a singles game. Why is it called "Scotch" Doubles??? Not English/American/Philippine doubles? Maybe because pool originated in Scotland??There must be some historical explanation for it?

SCOTCH DOUBLES ARE GREAT!
I've always liked Scotch Doubles. We used to play "classic" doubles where it's one player per inning. It was fun, but usually the best player dominated a match. I don't like severe limitations on coaching in Scotch Doubles; I would like to see perhaps ten seconds between shots to give one player the opportunity to point to the spot where s/he would like their partner to leave the cue ball, and maybe one or two thirty second time-outs per game to actually discuss strategy. I generally advise against just playing games in practice (rather than drills), but Scotch Doubles is a great way to learn strategy if one of the team members has shot selection knowledge.

The best explanation I've heard is that it's borrowed from golf in a sense where one of the formats of partners golf is to alternate shots.

Good thing no one asked me, I wouldve guess its from the stereotype of pool players being cheap and stingy.

I like scotch doubles because it makes me play better position (I seem to concentrate more).

Probably because I don't want to let my partner down.

Used to play a lot one pocket with a friend. Miss that guy as we took down some pretty good players playing this format. We knew each others strengths and weaknesses and played to those. That, and we never got upset with each other (which usually was the opposite for the other teams). It evens the playing field a lot when the best player cannot stay at the table except for a single shot. We also never allowed coaching of any kind which also helped level the playing field.
As to question of where it originated from, I Googled it and did not get a real answer.

could someone explain exactly what is scotch doubles??

As I understand it, it is a partners game. But you alternate each shot, not each inning. The way we play it here locally, you and your teammate can talk to each other every shot if you like, about which shot to take or where to leave the ball, etc. So long as you don't drag it out too much.

My explanation might not be completely accurate, so wait for someone more knowledgeable to chime in and confirm/correct.

I believe it could have derived from what one would drink in the bar depending on what kind of partner you have:D

In golf such a match is called a foursome, not scotch doubles.

The term scotch doubles is also used in bowling, maybe it was borrowed from there.

The guys that originated the game were drinking scotch when it was invented. Hence the name Scotch Doubles. :D
