Scotty Townsend

You doubt? You must know me to assume facts such as that, right? You still haven't answered the question where are you at? You know where I am.

I don't think you have to be a tournament winner to be a great....look at Mark Tad(d?), he was easily one of the best players in California in his day, but you didn't see him in many major tournaments very often.

I think a great example of being great but not having to win major tournaments to prove it would be John Schmidt not so long ago. Before coming out a year or so ago he was killing everyone for money including the top touring pros who win a lot of tournaments. There are probably hundreds of GREAT players that we will never read about because they can make more money by staying under the radar. I have never seen Scotty play but I would never say that he wasn't a great player just because he didn't win major tournaments. Find out how many top pros would gamble with him and that would tell you how strong he was.

Dave

Tap, Tap, Tap,,,,nice shot Dave.

Back in the 70s we used the term Champions for the top hand-full of players in pool such as, Buddy, Mike, Miz, Larry, Allen, etc. Now, according to the previous young man, Louie Roberts was NOT a great player. WRONG.

Dave, you are right on cue (no pun intended) with your post.

Last time I saw Scotty, he beat all the top players, winning the tournament that brought him there, and I kept wondering how in the hell he played so damn good with his feet stuffed in those pointed lizard-skin cowboy boots of his.

Hemicudas..... Why do you want to know where i am? Ok guys I"ve said this a few time already on here and i guess I"ll have to say it once more. When i said Scotty was a average player i was making an opinion, Hemicudas lol now your calling scotty a champion? what titles does he have? Dont tell me your putting him is the same class as The miz, buddy hall, That would really make you look crazy. DDKoop... that is what this whole thing is about!!! if you can call scotty townen and john schmidt Great players than what do you call Efren, Buddy hall, Nick varner,Earl strickalnd?????

KingCueball, sometimes it is not the size of the dog in the fight; it's the size of the fight in the dog.

Good point MS. Our friend the King? not only has trouble penning his thoughts, we now see he has trouble reading too. But I do give him credit, after all, this is obviously his second language.

Scotty Townsend is a good friend of mine. He is better known as a bar table specialist.

He has always had a reputation for winning when he's playing for big money. He's never been afraid to bet his own dough either. Some of those champions that play on the tour have a hard time playing for that big money, but Scotty doesn't, and there's a lot of players that don't play on the tour that are champions, and he's one of them.

Thank you Kieth.......those of us that got to grow up watching Scotty know. I never said he was the best in the world, but at any given time.........he might beat anybody in the world. He plays on the level above the norm! In the league of alot of Champions.

Great as well. So what is your point seeing that you have not really made one yet other than in your opinion you can't call Scotty great in the same respect you call Efren, Buddy etc.. great. I just don't think the premise is correct and that is why everyone is speaking up. I am not trying to say that Scotty plays as well as Efren but that does not mean he is not a great player. I guess I just don't get it.

The whole thing this is about is........a guy wanted some stories about Scotty. There are alot of Champions that not everybody has had the chance to see. A great example is John Schimidt........2 years ago not everybody had heard of him. But now that he has won some big tourneys.....he is more know. Someone mentioned Mark Tad too. Everybody has their opinions on who is the best of all..........that doesn't mean that any of these guys are less of a player. Scotty and alot of other players are in the top 10% of players in the world...........and can be considered Champions. I just wish I could have been thought of as a player like Scotty....................lol! I use to love watching Scotty fire balls in the hole. You could watch him for 5 minutes and realize that he was a notch above the good player. He is a great player..........Efren and Strickland are in a league of their own. But you can't tell me that either one of those guys will beat Scotty consistantly. In the long run they usually will..........but if Scotty even has the slightest thought that he can win........HE WILL! He has more heart than alot of pros..........Keep firin'em in the hole Scotty. And Hemi.......tell Scotty that Chuck from Milton is practicing up for the ORANGE CRUSH! LOL I played him once at the Red Carpet with the 6, last 3 and the Break. I use to play decent........but Scotty out ran it and busted me and Morty.

I remember that World 9-ball Scotty placed 3rd/4th.
The other player to share 3rd/4th was Ernesto Dominguez.
Ernesto's one hell of a player too but never won huge tournaments as he really makes more money as a table mechanic.
I heard you don't want to get into a fight with Scotty.
I guess he could dish it out too.

I met Ernesto one time at a tourney....nice guy. Scotty is a scraper....lol. I heard he bet a guy he could pick up the end of a 78 LTD. Then he crawled underneath the back end and did a push up....lifting both wheels clean off the ground. Hemi.......ask Scotty to tell you a stroy about a guy that bet he could drink 3 beers faster then him. Or something like that.......the guy said he could drink 3 cans of beer in 7 seconds.....not sure......just remember Scotty tell a story about it once.

Without a doubt, Scotty is the toughest lb for lb pool player on the planet. Yea, I heard that story. Did he tell you the one about jumping off the Hughey P. Long bridge in New Orleans? Scotty and Painter were a hell of a team back in the 70s & 80s. Did you ever notice Scotty even sounds like Painter when he talks, LOL?

Yeah i remember scotty in the semi finals at the worlds. Johnny was way out in front, Scotty fought his way back but came up a little short.

King
Scotty is a champion. He has had his ups and downs.
Keith posted his opinion and he has played with and around him for years. It was very well put.
Offensively I have only seen 2 people that played any better.
Mark Tadd and Efren. Scotty has not had the career in pool
as some of the others but has played just as well as the top pros.
Some of the players ahve had more storied careers and
have lived life differently but the class above Scotty is
a very small one.
Its hard to judge pool talent over a long time because a player
might be on top of his game for a few years and then slide a little.
Scotty in the 80's could ahve beated anyone on a bar table.
I watched him and mark Tadd play with Mark giving him the
8 and its the best session that was ever played. There
were more 5-8 rack runs it was crazy. Everyone agreed that
was there that it was something we all wished was on video.
Scotty is not Efren, Buddy, Earl, or Archer but he is a champion.
If you need a title then check out the US Bar Table Championship
he won. It was full of good players and great ones. Not only
that he won $$$$$$ on the trip back to the south.

Didn't Scotty finish high in one of the Tournys they had years back, They played with the Miss=Ball in Hand Rules. No safteys allowed. If you missed the other guy gets ball in hand. Some idea they had to speed the game up. I don't remember how many they had like that, but I remember Scotty leaving town one time to go play one.

To the person looking for the stories.
There are hundreds. I seen him take some of the worst games
possible and out run them.
He used to travel getting in toughman contests. If there
was a way to get his life and stories written down it would be
quite a read. Hard to believe the ups and downs he has had.
He shot the second best shot I have ever seen once in
Ft. Walton. He was in one corner and the five ball was in the opposite corner about the full distance of the table. It was hill to hill. The 6 and 7 were hooking him from hitting the five and thye
were only a few inches from the cueball. The eight was easy and nine was hing up in front of the side.
Neither of the 6-7 would go but if he gave up ball and hand on the five he would lose and more than likely if he had hit the five
and let the other guy to the table he would lose.
Scotty looks at it and says in that Scotty voice that theres only
one chance. He has to jump the balls and go length of the
table and draw the ball and break out the 6-7. Everyone
chuckled. He jumped it and it made the five and shot back down
the table and broke them out and left him a shot on the 6.
It was an incredible shot.
I always wondered how he could play so long in either the cowboy boots or the knee high moccasin looking things.
When he is firing with all cylinders he is one tough SOB
to beat. Definitely a character all the time.
