Instead of scratching, what happens if the cb stops in the jaws of the pocket, beyond the end rail?
"In the jaws" is not a defined term in WSR. CSI rules do define the jaws. Either way, the answer to your question would depend on a couple of specifics:
Assuming the opponent's lag does not violate any of the lag provisions, then per both WSR and CSI rules:
If the ball touched the side rail at any time during the lag, it is loss of lag (WSR 1.2d, CSI 1-12-2-d).
If the ball rests "...past the nose of the head cushion." it is loss of lag (WSR 1.2e, CSI 1-12-2-e).
The specific wording in WSR 1.2e leaves a little to be desired. The position of a ball in WSR is determined by its base, but it would be pretty tough on most tables to have the base of the ball resting past the nose of the head cushion and have it remain on the table. I think it's a pretty safe bet that WSR intends that the edge of the ball be used in determining the position of the ball under 1.2e.
CSI rules, while also not specifying the edge of the ball in the text, do provide a diagram that is specifically referred to in 1-12-2-e, and that diagram leaves no doubt as to the rule's intention concerning the edge of the ball.
