I came to Laos to support the Thai team not expecting there to be any items of interest for AZers until I found out that the Philipines had sent a powerhouse team including Efren Reyes; Francisco Bustamante, Ronnie Alcano, , Dennis Orcullo, and the current women's world ten ball champion Rubilen Amit. I was a bit schocked to see this power house coming to a small regional amateur tournament . The countries involved are Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Camobodia, Singapore, Malaysia, Burma, Indonesia, East Timor, Brunei and the Philippines. The SEA games are played every two years and are in the nature of an olympic competition only including many sports particular to South East Asia. Here in Vientiane, the capital city of Laos; its on from Dec 9th though the 18th.

The second surprise I got was that Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamente crashed out in the first round of men's 9 ball doubles. They were defeated by the Thai team 7 to 4. Rubilen Amit was also schocked. She walked into the competiton venue near the end of the match; saw the score and just looked up at the ceiling, held out her hands as if saying "who would have thought it".

In any case, great fun and good matches to come, if there is an interest on the part of AZers I will give some up dates as we go along. As well as 8 ball and 9 ball, doubles and singles, we have snooker, doubles and singles, English Billiards; double and singles and a game called one cushion carom , singles only. Women are only playing in the pool games.

Wish I could report on the out of tournament pool scene but there isn't one. :frown:There is a casino in the hotel being used for the cue sports and a good number of people are spending the evening there.

Southeast Asian Game is a big deal in that region . . . Filipinos receive some money if they win a gold.

I am not sure how big the money is for the Philipino stars who have come here to the SEA games but I am once again impressed with how nice they and the whole Philipino team are. I have a picture of Reyes, Bustamante, Alcano and Orcullo standing together and cheering on their teammate who was competing in one cushion carom.

Also sat in the practice room along side Bustamante as he was critiqueing Efren Reys and Ronnie Alcano as they tryed to play snooker. Jango said he didn't want to shoot pool with the snooker players,
"They pot the ball too good" . Bottom line is the Philippines doesn't seem to be a snooker country. The Thai, the Singaporeans and the Malaysians seem to be the best here. Nice to be able to meet these guys in a non pressure situation.

Tom,
Wish I was there. Sounds like fun.

I'm playing in the Bangkok Pool League singles tournament today. Sorry you & Toy can't make it.

See you soon.
