Cuemaker are you using any Special Secreat Sauses, or Special Potions to TREAT the Side of a NEW TIP to Prevent Mushrooming?

Special Sauce

I like the name Special Sauce...That is what I use for the Sauce I use for Shaft Sealer, Linen Wraps and Hand Rubbed Cues. I have always called it "Special Sauce". For the edge of tips, I love to use Polishing Compound (Green / White) can at the Automotive store, and then rub it on the tip also, it polishes the ferrule, and burnishes like no other . Sometime is us good ole spit too...

You can't prevent mushrooming.
You can vise the tip so it compresses but it'll still mushroom.
Leather is leather.
My special sauce is just french polish and thick leather to burnish the sides of the tip.

Sure you Can stop it, Just stick It in case and never shoot with it:eek: :p

Seriously though, The best thing I know is to compress them also, but do have to be carefull with some tips, and the amount of compression used. I just use one of those small drill press vices, and Can get a good feel for how Much preasure I apply with It. I guess some kind of gauge would be nice though.

My special sauce is just a spit and shine, and possibly a carnauba, or something when the shaft Is being treated like others have mentioned. I don't always use those type polishes though. On some ferrules that needed sealed anyway, I have sealed the edge of the tip also after burnishing, and that made a nice seamless joint there. Greg C

Opinions?????

I've thought about using some thin super glue on the side of the tip. Especially on soft tips like Elkmaster.

What do you guys think?

I think it would penetrate the tip and ruin it. The first time it hit a ball it could compress and make little cracks all around the edge of the tip. That looks nasty:( .

I use thin super glue on all Elkmasters...They keep coming back for more and more...same customers...I put on about 2-3 coats lightly after the tip is finished, then I rescuff the end of the tip again. Looks a ton better too.

That's what I used, I've only done it a few times, and honestly I did think about it cracking or something, but that never took place that I could tell. I was using It on pressed tips that were harder though, and I did burnish & prep the tip first, so have no idea about softer tips. Greg C

> I also use the thin CA on Elk Masters when installing them, they cut a LOT cleaner for me this way. I also use it on occasion for putting a final finish on the sides after burnishing. I use a Loctite CA that comes with a brush applicator inside the cap, apply a thin coat, wipe with a paper towel, apply a second coat, wipe, and sand with 1500,then buff with a 3-sided nail buffer. I also use it on my personal shafts every time,I also color the sides of my tips with a black Sharpie. Tommy D.

I picked up some with the brush applicator a while back when they first showed up on shelves here, and It is really handy. I use It for many things. I thought the stuff would dry out in the bottle and get nasty, but so far they have stayed nice and fresh for longer then I would expect them to.

I've had no complaints so far when I've done the tips that way, and the finished product is really clean & smooth looking. You can't feel where the tip starts when It's sanded and polished with the ferrule. I'm not saying It's the right or wrong way to do it, just That I had good results the times I've done them that way. If there's a down side, It may be in the feel, but have had no complaints with that either. It's not something I do all the time though.

As a poolroom owner, I cringe when I hear this procedure is done. That goes directly from the tip to my Simonis cloth. Keep in mind that Sharpies are PERMANENT markers. Not good.
