Secrets!

Secret: inside english is sometimes required to gain favorable position with the CB.

Secret: Efren sincerely believes that before and during play, he will find a way to win a rack and set(s) of one pocket.

Secret: 2 + 2 = 4

I know, I know, I'm poking fun, but...

I must agree that, without question, there are secrets that any pool player may never discover. These secrets can include basic strategy, shot selection, english/stroke secrets, mental edge tactics, among many other things. IMO, self control and sharp mental acuity are the two best friends of a talented shooter.

The beauty of pool is that, much like other great games, it can only be learned, never mastered. Unless you are Efren playing for un-televised huge stakes. =)

Okay, so here's how he shot it. He used a firm draw stroke with center ball and hit the shot so the cue ball skidded down the table until the draw released and the cue ball slowly turned over. The cue ball was now only about a foot away from the object ball and rolled slowly into it. He made the ball and the cue ball came to rest a few inches away. It was a very cool shot to see. Later I asked him why he hit it this way. He explained to me that by hitting it firmly like this the cue ball wouldn't roll off and he could make a thin cut on the object ball and the cue ball would die on the end rail, which it did.

One of you (DRW) got it just about right. It's pretty hard to use force follow on a thin cut shot. The cue ball will get away from you. Now if the shot is relatively straight, you can use force follow to kill the cue ball off the end rail.

P.S. Kelly was a great player, only the best of his generation! Maybe one of the best all around players ever. Kelly had no weaknesses at any game! He was something to see, an artist at work. Beautiful stroke, smooth as silk, an elegant manner as he moved around the table, almost like he was dancing. What a magnificent player he was. You can say what you want about tighter pockets and all that, but this guy would be a great player even today. He could play some pool!

I talked to Mike Sigel about this type of shot and he told me he could tell how many times the cueball would turn backwards before it stopped skidding and started natural roll. hard to believe , but i wouldn't bet he couldn't.

The draw/drag shot Jay is talking about is a SUPER STRONG shot to know. It's funny how many players who are my speed don't actually know that shot. And the best thing is that you can use it anywhere in a variety of ways.

Like this shot for example where you need to roll forward just a little bit to hit the window. Using draw/drag you can make the cueball hit the object ball with just enough momentum to carry it forward. Trying to do this with follow or no english is a much lower percentage shot.

CueTable Help

Call them secrets or anything you want, but I've seen some pretty good players overlook shots that they didn't even know were there. Either no one ever showed them or they just weren't paying attention. I'm proud to say that I taught Efren (yes that EFREN!) a new One Pocket shot that he loved so much he must have practiced it 25 or 30 times until he had it down. I'm not putting that one on here, so don't ask.
It's not in anyone's book either Mr. Johnson!:groucho:

Good try but my lips are sealed. If you show me the shot you are talking about I will let you know if it is the one I am thinking about that Keith excels at so well.

OK, I will try to figure out the cue table program and send you a link or something. Never used it so might be a couple days...

That must be a hell of a SECRET!

the drag shot, that Jay describes, is cetainly no secret to snooker players.
It may be unknown to many players, but that doesn't make it a "secret". Coming on a discussion board to announce "I now something you don't and I'm not telling" is as juvenile as it sounds.

Jeeze Pat quit being so uptight. No one is saying that someone has some major thing that NO ONE ELSE on Earth knows about.

The point is that better players, top notchers, often have knowledge of things that THEY consider to be secrets that they don't want to share with just everyone they meet. If you can't understand the simple concept of if you can't spot the sucker in ten seconds then it's you then you have no business being in this discussion.

And guess what? If someone knows something that they won't tell then it's their secret. Maybe you already know it and maybe you don't. But until you and the other side reveal what you know then one or both of you is keeping it secret. Got it?

Then how come there are so few that will get the cream? Others, the population not opened to the ideas (passageways), will denounce it because it counters their intuition so much to the point of disbelief. If you are open to the idea that this game has many counter-intuitive concepts, you may start to do the right thing.

We all use shots that THAT FAMOUR POOL PLAYER Mr. X showed us and other pool players don't use or know and I'm sure if we were to enumarate shots that only us do in our entourage, a lot of them would get repeated here.

There is this one shot that I don't even see some of the stronger players in my area try in their dreams. But their whole game package is stronger than mine so that's why I lose. Its not just ONE shot that will make me a better player overall but its nice to know them.

I'm sure if I described the shot here, 75% of the players here would say "oh that's easy, I know that shot" but rarely use it.

Was that non sequitur supposed to be a response to my post?

Anyway, if you think knowing "secrets" is how good players play well, then you probably don't.

Pick a subject and an author you feel best represents it and we will see how much you and I know if he has covered everything there is to know about it. I'll give you the first shot.

I will not hold your hand Patrick.

Show me.....

My first secret
I was accurate when I was a kid.
But being shown that draw shortens the angle on a kick.....
...made me want to explore the mysteries
