Send Mike Wong to Derby City

First I will like to say thanks for being understanding last week .
I think you are being a little tough on mike .
I didn't read his whole post
But doesn't he offer a 50 50 split of any profit won ?
This sport is so hard to make it if we don't help some players out then this sport will prolly die .
With all the pool players on az billiards we should send players to tourneys .
Say 20 to 30 guys but up 50 each everyone gets a little sweet.
That's just my 2 cents but I'm a player so I'm sure that's why I see it this way .

I get what you're saying but it seems the only time Mike comes to AZB is to ask for something. I would think it would be a different story if it was someone like you who contributes on the forum. I would have no problem throwing some money at an AZB fund to send players to tournaments, that being said I would want the players that get the funds to be people like you or a number of others that actually answer questions from some of us bangers or share their stories or people that know juniors that are trying to make it to a big tournament.

Mike took some flack the first time he asked and I just think this is way too soon to come back and ask for more.

even if he did contribute to the forum, i dont have respect for people who quit their job, then ask other people for their hard earned money so that he can go to a tournament.

Is this the same Mike Wong who is mentioned in the video anecdote with Ginky San Souci posted recently by "Ron Mason?"

And "Ideologist," so you knew poolrooms in the old days where guys DIDN'T stand around looking for handouts! Maybe you're right. They didn't so much stand around as they circulated around the room going from one potential sucker to another.

Agreed, that probably wasn't the best thing to post lol. But say Bartrum posted here that he found a big game but couldn't get a hold of his backer and asked for people to stake him I'm guessing the forum would be a bit more lax on that.

I've seen a number of people coming here just to ask for handouts or try to get something for free and then everyone is called nits and other crap because they fire back at the OP. I've also seen a number of times where something was stolen or someone has medical issues where the forum members really came together and helped.

AZB can be a great place where people take care of people they have seen post and help, but if you are just coming here for a handout it's probably not the place you want to be. I believe this is exactly how it should be.

big distinction to be made, bartrum asking to get staked (which he has before for tournaments, and I along with others have put him in) and mike asking for "sponsorship" are two very different things.

Many people quit their job for many reasons.....heck maybe the job wasn't paying him enough and he feel that he has a better chance at pool. Maybe he actively looking for work to find something better...who knows and who cares.

My point is that he's dedicated himself to his dream and is asking for sponsorship. Mike as I know has a "brand" value as one of the slowest player in the pool community and one of the hardest working player. It might sound negative to some...but I think there's values in pretty much the entire pool community knowing him and his work ethic. Sponsors understand that sometime word of mouth is better than mass marketing...and I think Mike offering to work hard and promote the sponsor's brand does have some merit here. Only question is what is it worth to sponsor? For all we know, this could be a rocky story.

Just saying..give it a rest already. Mike does have some values to offer here so just let potential sponsors decide if what he's offering make sense to them.

I know at my local pool room in Steinway Billiards that Mike have been promoting all of his sponsors by talking about them to people he meets.

Magic chalk has definitely made an impression in New York is all I can say.

CSI sponsorship to Mike was also cool in my book. Just glad to see that there are company that still support players.

Best of rolls guys.

Funny how on the stream this weekend that Upstate Al did on the predator tour finale,
Mike played Earl Strickland and had on just a plain black t-shirt and not his sponsors
Chicago RJ's magic chalk patch.

Agreed, but somewhere in here Mike did say he would also accept a stake. There is no doubt you know more about these things then me but I agree there is a big difference between sponsor and staking someone. I've never staked a pool player and probably never will. If someone that commonly contributes was asking for help be it for a tournament or medical expenses or whatever I'm glad to throw a few bucks to a good cause. Other then that I'll keep my "staking" to buying pieces of people in poker tournaments.

I sponsored him for the US Open. Once the US Open ended, so did the sponsorship. Mike has no obligation to continue wearing anything affiliated with MC. Of course, if that shirt comes back into the "rotation" again after laundry day and he wears it, I won't complain. But he can wear whatever he wants now. Now, the real question, what kind of chalk was he shooting with at the Predator event ;)

Now that Mike Wong has quit his job to pursue greatness, I would love for him to post a timeline of a typical day of his training regiment.

What color is the wrapper on the Magic Chalk. It was a red wrapper, could be master, not sure. Maybe you should pm Mike and ask him.

He definitely should. I'm wondering how much time he spends practicing on a daily basis? Also wondering how much money it costs weekly for table time

I am still using Magic Chalk, I like to tape it up with electric tape to preserve the wrapper and the longevity of the chalk. I didn't see it as a big deal, it's just a local event. If it's a major event, I'm going to use a brand new piece of chalk, so people can see it. Thank you.

It's Magic Chalk. Look closely, you can see the black wrapper! I'm down to my last few pieces of chalk so I want to make sure they last!

it's black.
however, it's also "magic", so it could be invisible?

EDIT: probably the #1 selling point of Magic Chalk, is that IT LASTS.... i can run 15 hard, before having to rechalk.

I have been practicing barbox 8 ball with my higher deflection Schon shaft with a phenolic tip on it. And no chalk. I have run quite a few racks with it.

Magic Chalk is a scam at the price they charge. 99.9999999999% of miscues are due to bad stroke mechanics, not chalk.
