Nope, women are not allowed to play in the Open.

Speaking of the women, it would be cheaper for us to put together something to pay expenses for a lady to go to a WPBA event.

Just a thought.

Mike

news to me. I thought that women could play but had to compete with the men.:D

After looking at their site, I think setting up an account and sending money to the “chosen one” would be fairly simple.

Does AZB have a logo and/or shirt design?

This is what I'm waiting to see, if in fact there is enough interest.

Rick

I think even a partial sponsorship would be fine with most players. OF course
a player would have to be found that is willing to go even if it meant some of their own money. I think a decent amount could be collected.
I would have to say that I think Jimmy would be an excellent choice.
Keith would be as well but maybe it would give Jimmy a chance to
go play something he might not have went to.
Has he ever been to the US Open?

I doubt that there will be 100 people that say they will much less send it.
Its still a good idea.

Laura, The website says "The U.S.Open is OPEN to Any and ALL Men Pool Players". It's news to me also. I don't see why they would bar women from playing especially since there is difficulty filling the field.

I doubt that they would be flooded with female entries. If they were, so much the better. More money for the men.

This was discussed last year when some of the fans wanted Allison to play in the event. Barry came out and said that women were not allowed to play.

In my opinion, this is a bad idea. I want to see the best, deserving players in top tournaments like the US Open. Not someone who whose buddies pitched in to send him. You're hurting the reputation of the event, by sending non-deserving players.

Please state the criteria for entering the US Open...oh- I'll do it for you: $500.

FYI, there are many players who enter the US Open who have a very small chance of winning. They do it for the fun and the experience.

One of our local players plays in all the UPA events and I can't remember the last time he cashed. He does it because he loves to play with good players. Are you saying he has no business there?

Wally~~thinks Jimmy M. can cash

Of course not Wally. I enter pro or open events just because I want to play good players also, even though my chances at cashing are very low. My point is, I pay for that education myself.

Pig: If the only criteria for entering the open is to pay $500, that's pretty sad. I thought it was more like the world's, where countries try to send deserving players. So the US Open is a tournament that any bum can enter? Kinda takes away from the luster, doesn't it?

Way to go, Mike!!!! :D I like the way you think. But I'm not sure it would be cheaper; the entry fee is the same either way. Plus players have to qualify to play in a WPBA event, so you can't send just anybody, even if she's the best player on the planet! It might be easier to send a male player to the U.S. Open after all (not to be a traitor to my gender or anything).

My Vote

I want to vote for Rude Dog. I will chip in $50. Hell, I got a brand new 2000 Espiritu cue that retailed for $530 that has never hit a ball that  I will donate for auction to raise money for him. Maybe his PO will let em go with us all behind him. I am just a sucker for underdogs. Keith can handle his own end. Our buddy could use some help.
JMHO Don P.

If anybody needs a get away, it's him.

Mr. Purdy, I appreciate that very much. I know that the chances of this thing ever happening are very slim but what you said is worth more than going to the U.S. Open. Playing in this tournament is very high on my "Things to do" list and has been for a long time. I regret not doing it when I was playing my best and then had all those years to dwell on it while on "vacation". Thank you for your kind words.

Rude Dog, guys like me really appriciate guys like you who don't roll over. ;) That is a sign of true character. If you need a decent cue or some help getting there, let me know. I will be there and would love to see you play. Any man thats been turned down is bound to be a friend of mine. "John Prine".

If anybody wants me...

...I'd be the cheapest player to sponsor. No airfare, I live about 3 and a half hours drive away; $500 entry fee (of which I have part) plus $700 for hotel, food, and gas=$1,200 total. Oh, and I am a pretty good player, btw. Any takers? I agree that AZB should send someone who needs the help to go, instead of someone wo regularly goes or who can easily afford to go.

I haven't played in it. I have to admit, it is one of the tournaments that I do want to play in some time. I went there once about 10 years ago, but I didn't play. Then another year, I had sent my entry fee in, but had to withdraw because of an issue at work. Many good pool playes have been ruined by jobs! ;)

Come On

Only 51 replys, come on guys, lets give someone a chance. Don't let this thread die along with someone's dream. I think this is a great idea! At least vote.

I'm new around here, but think this is a great idea and am all for it. From lurking around, I would vote for either Rude Dog or Jimmy M. both seem like stand up guys that would represent this contingent well.

Personally, I'm not ready for that level of competition, but am all for pitching in 25 bones to send someone who is...

You da man jaz. Thanks for posting. We definately will know who the NITS are when this is over. :D That information alone could save me the entry fee.

$25 wont change my life.... I am in. Sure would be be nice to see someone there that I helped send down.

Oh my gosh! I just read that someone submitted my name...LOL! Thanks for the vote of confidence...but I am not that anxious to get my fragile ego bruised....LOL.

I don't know Rude Dog...so my vote would have to be for Jimmy since I know that he is a stand-up guy and a heck of a player!
