Hey guys, count me in for 25. Whether the player wins or goes 2 and out, we can all say we had a horse in the running. This is the stuff I tell my friends about this board. There are times that a couple of people get into a little battle, but over all, It's like a big family. I do think that the player should have some kind of logo on at all their matches. It might also be nice to dedicate this sponsorship to an A-Z member/player who has passed away. Any suggestions? Sam

Guys im in. Mike lets setup a vote and try to get this done. What a great idea. I'll be there next year so it would be great to have a player im sweating for this year. Wonderful concept guys.

Food for thought; why don't we put up a poll where you can vote on the player you want to go. Maybe we can throw in a qualifier that if you vote, you are also making a $25 donation. We just need a list of nominees and a bookie to hold the cash (someone with a Paypal account?).

Using PayPal

Just remember if we use PayPal, we're going to lose some of the money to the overhead that they charge.

One other thought, any travel agent can book both the airfare and hotel and have them prepaid without using a credit card. So, if we select someone to hold the money they can write a check to a travel agent for the majority of the travel expenses.

Well, this idea of sending a poster to the US Open is beginning to take off. I had some doubt and still do but the response is getting better all the time. As of now 47 yes = $1175 that’s pretty good.

So far, by my account, the candidates who are being considered and seem to be willing to accept a nomination are: Jimmy M., Rude Dog, satman, poolplayer1988 and Mike H. Who is missing? Or who would also like to be considered?

Keith McCready and pigi have graciously bowed out, if I understood correctly.

Mike H -

Would AzB be willing to set up a paypal account so donation can begin? Or is there a better way? Seeing real money grow can open ones eyes.

Would AzB be willing to tally votes and verify the authenticity of the voters?

It truly wasn’t my intention to put any additional burden on you or AzB when I suggested this idea. Perhaps I was out of place by doing so. And I hope this hasn’t gotten the candidate hopes up for nothing.

Rick

I read this thread when it first started and haven't been back. I just noticed how many pages it is and decided to take another look. Hey, I'm in too and I don't care who you send. If this comes off, we need to do some thinking about it like have good updates on how our "horse" is doing. This is going to be fun!!! How do we proceed from here? Can we just send money orders to Mike or Don? It doesn't really matter to me, I'm just bringing up another possibility. When do we need to have the money in by?

I'm pretty sure Dave Syrja or TomCincy will have a laptop and internet access at the Open, just in case Mike's stringers don't get all the info.

I suggested paypal just because folks would be more likely to donate there with a few clicks rather than actually writing a check and mailing it.

It doesn't matter either way to me either. I would just hate to be expecting 50 checks and only get 20. It could happen.

This is incredible! I can't believe how supportive everyone has been for this idea. Of course I'd love to be the one chosen to represent AzB in the U.S. Open but if it comes down to either Jimmy or I, send him. I'm not saying that I wouldn't go if I was chosen, because believe me, my bags are packed and my cue is chalked and ready to kick some royal a$$! My kids are psyched over this because they have never seen me play for real. They've only heard the stories. But if I get 2nd place in the vote, I'd be happy for whoever does get chosen. And if it's Jimmy, even better. Good luck to whoever wins and thank you to all that votes for me. I like this site better and better every day.

Well, I'm not embarassed to ask a stupid question. I know that Jimmy M. is Jimmy Mendoza, but who is Rude Dog ? I feel like I should know this answer. Wasn't he discussed here on AzB not too long ago ? I feel like the answer is on the tip of my tongue, but I can't remember it. Is it Mark Tad ?
Man, I just hate it when I can't quite remember something.... Doug
Hey Doug, my name is John Morton and I used to play at Hard Times in Bellflower, Ca. Jimmy and I have known each other for at least 15 years and I watched is game progress over the years. I now live in Arizona and stay in contact with Jimmy but haven't seen him in quite a few years.

There are a couple very good questions here. Who would we rather send? Someone who will never get the chance to go, or someone who would have a chance to go?

Since John and Jimmy know each other, if they were to both go they could possibly be roomies to cut expenses.

Mike

Thanks for the quick reply John Morton. I guess that my next question to those voting and sending in the money would be... Are you thinking of sending someone from AzB that might go farther IN the tournament or are you thinking of sending someone that might never get there without AzB's help. I orginally voted No, but I've reconsidered.
What figure would you have to reach to send BOTH candidates ?

I think the original intent was to send someone who could play and that contributes to the board. But the possibility exists that no matter whom is sent, that person could go two and out.

Mike’s idea about sending two players is great but I feel many more people need to join the bandwagon for this to happen.

Rick <-- I thought Smorg would definitely vote for the idiot option.

Hey guys,

I think this is a great idea. I really hope that everyone helps out and can get one or both of you there. I don't believe I have met either Jimmy or Rude Dog but you both seem like great guys. I think you would do all of us here proud. Definitely count me in for a donation.

Good luck, I hope it all works out.

Yep. Looks like we are stuck at $1225 as of this writing. That's only enough for one player.

Perhaps some cuemakers, cue case makers or repairmen, Billiard magazines, or even the local room owners from the area of the participants, etc. will step forward and pick up the slack in order to bring this venture to fruition... (or, maybe not)... Doug (even the two players selected may be able to contribute 'something' to this endeavor)

Thank you very much Sarah and Jimmy and I both would do our very best if we were selected.

I'm not sure if this has been talked about (I haven't read through the whole thread) but, I might just be able to get the people/person going a free plane ticket, depending on where he lives and where the nearest airport is to the location of the tournament.

edit: no promises though, i will try my hardest.
