Senior tournament?

There haven't been any seniors' tournaments since before Steve Mizerak passed on. Since there are so many older big-name players and amateurs alike, who have little chance against the young turks, but who would love to play in another senior event; that I'm wondering if someone would be willing to promote one?

Jay or Grady would be the most likely directors, since they know all the players, and each have run many events in the past. I wonder if they would consider it? Funding is always the problem, but I have the feeling that the event would fill up at almost any size. I vote for a Winter event in the Southeast.;)

What are your thoughts on this, Jay? I know Grady has considered a followup to his successful Gulf Coast Classic a few years ago. Of course that was an open, multi-discipline event. I believe a suitable large venue is one of the problems for that type of affair. A senior tournament could probably be played on 8-10 tables.

Is there any interest out there?

I think

this is a small, but unfilled niche in the billiard world for senior's tournaments.
I would like to see them more often and just not contained to the Florida area.

Oklahoma City has an annual Seniors Tournament (Called 'Over the Hill' tournament) every year. I have played in it a couple of times, won it one year. Usually a 2 day tournament (Saturday and Sunday) with mini tournaments on Friday night. It was a fun tournament to play in, and I had a good time both times I played in it.

The first time, me and 2 of my Pool buddies, Jamie Sanders and James Hadley, went down, split a big room, had refrigerator and table chairs,
and stove in it, and we all broke even or made money between the minis and the regular tournament. I got beat by Walter Glass in the finals. I miscued on the 8 straight in the side with the cue ball on the rail ... ever do that? ....lol (8 ball tournament) This first time also, I got to meet Verl Horn's brother, who had a couple of Verl's cues with buckhorn joints, and he was just an absolute delight to talk Pool and about Verl with.

Second time, I drove down by myself on a Saturday, and they got the tournament done in 1 day. I won it, and the locals were not too happy about that.

Last year, my friend and cuemaker, Bob Owen (Shurtz Custom Cues) won the tournament down there. He said it payed over $550.
 
Paul Babineau holds one every year at his room in Raleigh, NC that gets a very good turnout.

Just a quick mention - There are both Senior and Super Senior divisions at the BCA bar-table amateur tournaments in May in Vegas.

You're one of about a dozen or so forum members who always seem to post some really great thoughts. And I personally think this is a super idea. But sponsorship is going to be so important.
I personally have 2 years to go...(if the age minimum is still 50) and would greatly love to look forward to such an event.
I have many of the Accu-Stats senior event tapes and you can't beat the atmosphere in those tournaments.

I think that is a great idea. I played in a couple of the seniors a few years back. I'll tell you what. Let me play with the schedules a little bit and see if we can wiggle a senior event into the Qlympics schedule in November.

I won't be able to confirm any of this for about 4-6 weeks - but I think I can do it. A lot will depned on the field sizes in the other events but should be able to do something.

Mark, I'm happy to see your interest. No one runs better tournaments than you and your staff! Whatever senior event you may consider, it might be prudent to schedule it around the same time as the one-pocket event, since as a percentage, more seniors will play in the regular one-pocket tourney, in contrast to the 9-ball or banks.

The game could be 9-ball. It might be interesting to play the old shoot-out rules, perhaps with shorter races-- say, to 7 or 8, with no 3-foul rule. Shorter race one-pocket would be popular as well. Perhaps races to 3. 10-ball is also a possibility.

We'll be looking forward to seeing what you might come up with.

Maybe have the rules be like Buddy suggested in his BD interview? I'd prefer it be 10 ball per Mark's suggestion. If the age is 50 you'll need a Super Seniors catagory. The years from 50 to 60 make for quite a bit of deterioation.

I might have to agree with you there, Jim. I'm 62. Actually, 50 & up brings in Efren, McCready, and lots of other sharpshooters!:cool:

I just got informed

last night, that Paul (owner of Shooters here) is having a Seniors Tournament
(50 and older) on July 7, 2007. Shooters is a popular place here in Wichita, and not hard to find.

Don't know much else except it is $50 entry, race to 5 9 ball. I know, I know, I complained about the short race too. They might go to 7 by tournament day.... LOL (hope so anyway).

July 7 is a Saturday and a single day. Nothing like a tournament on Saturday.

It lets the old guys have their fun in the sun for one day, an extra day to mend and then a chance to return to the old folks home with a good attitude on Monday.
