Shaft cleaning

What's the best way to clean a shaft? I have no lathe. Thanks for any advice.

You're going to hear a million different opinions. When I'm playing and I HAVE to clean a shaft, I take my towel, get the hottest water I can stand on it, wring it out as much as possible and then make a few passes over the shaft.. Immediately wipe it with a dry cloth. I then take a piece of 1000 grit sandpaper, make a few passes and then burnish with a piece of leather. You're not soaking the towel or the shaft...It should be barely damp. Hope this helps.

Is your shaft getting sticky during play? If so then simply wipe your shaft down with a dry cloth and then, the most important thing, wash your hands.

If you actually want to clean your shaft and get the chalk out, use Mr. Clean's Magic Erase with alcohol along the grain. The trouble here is without a lathe it is heard to burnish the shaft and seal back up or to apply wax effectively. It can be done, just not as easy as with a lathe nor as good. I wouldn't know how to do it manually as I have never had to.

good luck, Jim.

Thanks, Tank, but I am talking about a shaft that has chalk and crud embedded over a long period of time.

OH! Use the same process, just keep wiping down the shaft until no more grime is coming off. After doing this, you've raised the grain of the shaft, so from there, you'll have to hit with some 600, 800, then 1000 grit sandpaper until you get it where you want it. Then burnish with leather. You can always buy shaft cleaner or use a magic eraser.
