I have a new cuetec, and I think I will like the cue, but I just can't get use to the thickness of the shaft. Would it hurt the playability of the shat, considering the way they are made, if I had the thickness reduced?
 
Is it the 360 or the SST?

The 360 is wood the SST is clad.

Personally I would not mess with the clad SST shaft.

The joint is not that common for upgraded shafts so a new one might be a bit costly.

My question would be why did you buy a cue with a shaft that is larger than you like?

Maybe you should sell it & get what you really want.

Hello Rick, thank you for your reply, it is the 360, I traded for the cue. I didn't think the thickness would be an issue, but I seem to be having a problem shaking it.
 
Accept What You Got Or Trade/Sell It.

Don't mess with changing the shaft. It might not work, you could ruin the cue, and rest assured, your cue will be worth less afterwards.

Decide what you want in a shaft and either get a replacement shaft just the way you want it or get another cue......Do not alter what your have. You've been informed and warned.

Don't do it.........Either Sell or Trade The Cue.
 
I had similar problem with my G core shaft. I took it to Kieth Josey and the dropped the diameter to 12.5 mm and changed the taper. I love the way it plays now. Find a customs cue maker close to where you live. They can help you. Or you can call Kieth Josey and ship it to him. He does amazing work. His number is 1800 514 2837.
 
I'll second the idea of getting another shaft made to your desired thickness/taper and leave the factory one alone. You'll have the benefit of if you decide you don't like the cue still having the original shaft to sell with it, plus the new "spare". I have shafts ranging down to as low as 10.75mm with a very straight taper, but for each cue I have the original shaft as well.

You shouldn't play with your shat.

I think the 360 could be made smaller by a cue guy but like someone said that would probably kill any resale or trade value.

I'd look into getting what you want in another cue, unless you might want to keep it as a break cue if you find something else that you like better.

What exactly do you mean by a problem 'shaking it'?
 
Well, my opinion is how much he wanted to have it taken down. If he just wants it taken down to 12.5 or 12.6, I would say go for it. A cuetec isn't going to have much resale anyway. If that makes it a cue you are comfortable with, then I would do it. I wouldn't have it taken down real thin (like 11.5 or 11.75).
 
Do it!

Man, it's simple: you can't play with it, do whatever it takes to make you feel comfortable with it. If this means to turn it down to 10mm, do it. It will probably bend in time but that's not important. Your game is more important and spending a fortune on another shaft is not what you want. A turning down will cost you probably 40$. Find a cuemaker/repairman who can do this on a pro lathe and not using sandpaper from the beginning to the end and you're good.

Shaft diameter is a personal preference thing.
The old Tramp would have some commented further on that statement, but the new Tramp will leave it be and move on. :)
