Shaft fitment

Hi,

Is there any reason why a production shaft (Mezz) would screw on perfectly fine on my 3/8x10 Ed Prewitt cue but not on a sugartree with who is also 3/8x10?

When attempting on the sugartree it doesn't even want to start... Almost like the hole is too small. Totally stumped.

Any advice is appreciated.

Different screws ( one has a bigger minor ).
3/8 10 comes in a LOT of varieties.
.308 minor, .312 minor or eve .295 minor.

That explains why, next question is what is the easiest way to fix? Is it as easy as getting the appropriate tap and retapping the existing threads?

The threads aren't the problem, I wouldn't think. The hole needs to be larger. My pin requires a 5/16" minimum hole to fit. Some 3/8-10 pins can fit small holes, especially if the pins are v-thread. The shaft will need to be re-drilled or maybe even just reamed to fit. Any repair guy or cue maker can do it quite easily.

Thanks Eric! This makes a ton of sense as I was able to fit my original Prewitt shaft onto the butt of your cue. Upon inspection I noticed the hole is indeed bigger

I talked to Tommy, at least there are only two kinds of 3/8 11 he said .
.306 and .312 minors.
Thank God.
I'm sticking with 5/16 minor as well.

Well I reamed the hole to 5/16ths and it starts however it begins to cross thread early. I ran it through the following tap and still no dice

Is this the wrong tap?

Is it cross threading? Or is it just getting really tight? My pin is 5/16" minor, meaning it will fit a 5/16 hole but very tightly. My shafts get lubed to keep them from getting tight & locking. Try lubricating the threads with something. Linseed oil works pretty good, as does cue wax. I use Teflon.

Yeah 5/16 just seemed at the time to be a good size because it's a common drill size & I didn't have to bore anything or use any special tooling. I'm not sure if Tommy makes them for anybody else, or if he only makes the .308. Seems .308 is the only ones I ever see, besides mine.

It was getting really tight. I reran the 5/16 hole again, lubed the shaft and it fits like a glove now. Thanks for all the help!
