Shaft phenolic insert

I have a 3/8 x10 shaft with a phenolic insert that when screwed on the joint pin is snug .
I'm constantly checking it as it comes loose.
I know I can have it plugged and retapped.
Is there anything that anyone can think of to do until I do that ?
I'm currently using Teflon tape, but I'm wondering if there something I can put in the joint so I won't have to continually do the tape.
 
I'm guessing it has nothing to do with the way the pin fits. If it's coming loose by first bet is the joint faces are not good and need attention. Try cleaning them first and if that doesn't work then repair guy with a good lathe.

If you are using a Radial pin then it is inherent to the pin. It's just a little to coarse. If it is a different pin then chances are that the faces of the joint/shaft aren't quite square.

Oops, upon rereading your post I now see that it is a 3/8-10.

As said above...the facing may be off, but I will add that adding Teflon tape isn't going to help....that actually is equivalent to adding a 2 way lubricant, One, to screw it on, and Two, for it to unscrew. If it feels snug putting it together, and then loosens as you play, contact the person that did the work and ask them to re-face the joint. From my experience of using phenolic inserts, they don't loosen on their own, if anything they get too tight.

When I first put it together it goes to together flat and it rolls straight so facing might be a problem, but I don't think so.
When I tighten it, when the joints come together it feels tight. But as tightening it feels like its not real tight all the way as it gets screwed in.
Then after using it a little it just comes loose enough that I just tighten it all the time as I try to shoot.
The Teflon tape is just making it so there's no play in the joint. If that make sense.
I guess the best way I can describe what I'm trying to do, would be if I had a stripped piece of wood that I wanted to put the screw back into. I'd put couple toothpicks to help the screw catch. I know that's not the best way, but it works. And I'm not a carpenter.
If the phenolic is just a little too big can something be put into the hole to make the phenolic be tighter ?
I'll get the phenolic in the shaft replaced asap, but until then, I use the shaft a lot so it would be nice to know if there is a short term repair until then.
 
Is your pin ACME style thread ? If so it may be some inferior cold rolled pins that were sold on fleabay and elsewhere . If it is radial , you can find a maker with the undersize tap , first treat the threads of the shaft with thin CA , then run the undersize tap and should cure your problem ... I am equipped with such a tap . You should try to find someone local , save shp. , if not PM me ...;)
 
Sorry , didn't pay close enough attention ,you have a 3/8x10 pin . May have to bore and replug the shaft , drill and retap . I would treat with the thin ca glue , then re tap the threads and see if that works before replugging ... Might work ...;)
 
Do the surfaces of your joint face look shiney smooth. The smoother the face the better the faces grab each other and hold. If rough refacing still might solve the problem. Treating the faces with some shaft sealer might also help.
 
Would the shaft sealer be ok to put on the butt joint thread so it would get inside the shaft joint ?
 
I would not put shaft sealer on the pin. If you want to treat the threads us a Q-tip with a small amount. Let it dry completely before putting together.
 
3/8-10 pins will definetly work loose during play at times but it's such a good pin it's a necessary evil imo. Perfectly flat faces as Chris mentioned will certainly help. I use a few drops of liquid automotive wax in my wood threads. The base liquid in the wax helps to penetrate the threads and swell them a bit and then evaporates away and leaves a nice layer of wax on the threads. Makes a really nice fitting joint.

Hi Chief,

Ray Henandez put water into an Omega Shaft threaded phenolic insert and the next day the insert had expanded and the sidewall of the shaft wood split.

So be careful. I would not have believed it if I did not see it with my own eyes. He was trying to get the threads to swell up because he used a standard 3/8 14 tap with the standard minor. Anyone familiar with a 3/8 14 pin for a cue understands a smaller minor is required or you get too loose a fit.

When I get a chance I'll give you a call and see when you can re-plug and re-tap it. Been busy with the grandkids or I would have set something up with you already..

I wouldn't be afraid to try it. Phenolic is much more stable than maple, and it only takes a couple of drops. The base liquid in wax evaporates much faster than water does. Thats why the wax hazes in just a few minutes,,,it's liquid base is a carrier for the wax application, and then evaporates away. Put 2 or 3 drops in, screw the shaft in to spead the wax evenly, then unscrew the shaft and let it sit overnite. Usually I get a very nice fitting joint, On rare occasions I do it a couple of times.
