shaft pins

I ordered a new cue with a 3/8 11in. brass pin.I originally was going with the quick release but the cuemaker felt that the brass would be better for my cue.I would like to hear different opinions on the different type of pins and why use one opposed to the other.
Thanks in advance

Well, the 3/8-11 probably has flat bottomed threads (modified ACME), which will last longer, and give more contact between the pin and shaft wood, for a better hit. Some say the uni-loc is the most solid joint in the world. I don't, i had a junk cue (bought just for this purpose) took the original pin/insert out, put in a uni-loc, test played, took the uni-loc out, put in a radial (i know, not the same thing, but close) and it hit/felt better. Just my experience...

Thanks,

Joint Pin

I find it to be personal as to what pin you like. I like the 5/16-14 due to the fact I can have a lot of different shafts or different butts to mix it up. I think it is what you like don't change just because Joe Public has to. I tried them all and always go back to the 5/16-14 (just me) I just started to play with a Southwest and thats a 3/8-11 I really like the hit of the cue but in the back of my mind I know it not the 5/16-14 that I love. I'm just crazy like that. When it comes to getting a custom cue I tell the cuemaker what I like and let him go from that point. If I'm paying someone to make me a cue I want to know that they would be happy to play with it also.

Uni-Loc sucks. Now this is not a conclusion reached by any scientific measure, it's simply that every Uni-Loc cue I've hit with sucked!

My shooting cue is a Radial-pinned w2w, but I have owned and shot with many piloted ss cues as well (JOSS, older Predators, Mottey, etc). As long as the piloted pin is 5/16-14 it's good, but ones with Uni-Loc just plain (again!) sucked. I have no idea how a piloted joint with different pins can create a different hit (in and of itself) but it seems to be true.

Total Agreement

Buddha I Agree 100% I Haven't Found A Uniloc Cue I Like Either. I Have Never Figured Out Why It Is Sucha Big Deal. Thecuealways Seem To Feel Hollow With A Unilock Joint, I Assumed It Was Because There Is Very Little Contact Between The Pin And The Insert, But Looking At The Design It Is Tight All The Wayto The End Of The Pin So I'm Not Sure Why It's Like That Either. I Like The Old School 5/16 14 Pin. If It Was Good Enough For Gus And George, It's Good Enough For Me.

If you are asking why the popularity of the Uniloc then I would guess it's part of our have it now society. People want to have the cue ready to shoot immediately and not have to wait for the extra 1-2 seconds to screw together a full threaded joint pin.
