Shaft weight (mezz alpha hybrid vs 314 2)

If shaft weight change the balance of a cue and affects the feel of the cue altogether. Not many shaft specify the weight of it. I would like to know what is the actual weight of the two shafts.

I tried a mezz cue with 314 2 shaft and feels good, but i want to buy a alpha hybrid for more feel.

Your information is highly appreciated. Anyway, if you choose between the 2 which one you will go for?

i had an old school 314 and it weighed a little over 4oz (could have been the foam in the older 314's!lol). the alpha shaft i got weighed more than that.

i sold it because i didn't like it. it felt kind of like a higher quality cuetec shaft. it felt like some of the impact was absorbed when you hit the cb.

i kind of wish i had kept it longer just because i'd like to have a given it more of a chance.

between the two the older 314 was the better shaft. my old 314 was real stiff. i'd give a hybrid alpha another chance but i'm not sure if i'd dig it. hard to find demo shafts in this neck of the world ya know!

they're real hard to find but i'd recommend getting one of the pre-2 predators. i've heard nothing but complaints from players about how the -2 ones fall appart. ferrules cracking, breaking in half or even the shafts breaking.

if you have to go ahead and get the 314-2 but be prepared to pay for repair costs if you do. if you can get one of the 12.8mm WD700 i'd get one of those before i'd get one of the 314-2's
 
the mezz shafts are on the heavy side. I have all the mezz shafts (wd700, h2p, alpha, hard maple) and they are all over 4.0oz. Most are in the 4.1-4.3 oz range, they keep a pretty tight tolerance on shaft weight. I do have a 314-2 with the united joint and it is 4.0oz, though I had someone hand pick out a heavy shaft for me. The predator shaft weight can vary a lot, I'd say 4.0 is on the heavy side.

i can feel it man. i'm going to end up just like you, with at least 1 of each of the mezz shafts, one day.

i can't say enough good things about how happy i am with the mezz PUJ shaft i just picked up. nothing fancy about it. it's just a 12" pro tapered shaft made with good shaft wood. it's nice and stiff and hasn't let me down yet. i count maybe 14 growth rings. i'm not sure if that's a lot or not but the shaft is less than an inch so i figure it's gotta be decent!

i recommend getting a PUJ shaft. all the LD stuff is mostly hype. mezz's LD shafts hit better than most but i still think it's a hair gimmicky

i feel ya....mezz just makes such a quality product, count me as a big fan. all of their shafts play great, it is so hard to decide which is my fav. all of their shaft wood is really good....dense, straight, tight grain. never seen a prod company consistently put out such quality shafts, tight weight tolerances, perfect facings. those japanese are something else....

Which one would you say plays closest to the Universal SS (RS) version, if any?

I have one of the USS RS shafts, so I can compare pretty well. None of the Mezz shafts really feel like the RS hit-wise. The RS uses an XTC ferrule which is very lightweight and has a distinct feel to it. Also the WD700 and HP2 shafts are thinner at 12.5mm. I'd say the regular maple Mezz shaft is the closest. It has normal deflection and is thicker at 12.8mm. It has an Aegis 2 ferrule, so the hit is different (more squirt, but more solid and better feel than XTC IMO). All the other Mezz shafts are LD to varying extents and the HP2 and Alpha have composite cores, which feel totally different. All of the Mezz shafts hit a lot livelier and pingier than the USS, which is on the quiet side (probably due to it's construction and perhaps the fabric stuff).

Here's a few measurements I took earlier this year:

Joss Butt weight = 15.2 oz
Joss Shaft = 3.7 oz balance point 10.75 inches from joint
314-2 = 3.8 oz balance point 10 inches from joint
Cue balance point really didn't seem to change very much from 19 inches

Patrick Butt weight = 14.8 oz
Patrick Shaft 3.6 oz balance point 12.5 inches from joint
HPII = 3.5 oz balance point 11.5 inches from joint
Cue balance point moved from 19 inches to 18.75 inches
