Where is the best place to buy quantities of straight grained shafts ready for final turning. I am looking for quality wood, no sugar marks, and dead straight. I will also post this in the Ask the Cuemaker forum in case this is the wrong place for this question. Thank you!

I recently over paid for an order from Chris Hightower so I told him to just throw a few shaft dowels in the box. I was pleasantly surprised when I opened the box. I have also purchased from joe with good results.

I'm actually surprised that you got a reply so quickly.. Typically wood suppliers, while not a secret.......usually, are not freely given out.

I will tell you NOT to order from a certain sack of .... by the name of Geof Dilley. He is a well documented liar and scammer.

My pick would also be Joe Barringer at Cue Components. Since I am just getting started I, like Jay, only have small orders, but the professional customer service & quality are still there. Thanks Joe

Cue Components for sure. Ive ordered shaft wood from several suppliers and you can't beat the quality/price/service from joe.

Joe

Yep! I've had good luck with Joe. I've only bought enough material for one cue, but had a great experience. Tom

NME007,

I am sure you will get some good shaft wood from Joe B. But you are already in Northern Michigan, which is where a lot of the good shaft wood grows. It just seems odd to me to get some shaft wood from Joe in Florida that originally came from your neck of the woods anyway.
But yes, Joe has a great reputation for supplying the good stuff.

Oops - I skipped over the part about "going to Europe".

I am sure Joe can give you a deal but if you are looking to save some money and buy a good quantity these guys are worth a call:
http://champeau.com/en/products.php

Except they are out of their good supply(normally) and you have to buy at least 110 at a time. If you want to keep calling Canada, maybe you can reach them when they have some A stock, but they won't call you or send an email as a heads up. I seriously doubt I'll ever make the effort to order from them again...

Apparently, they have enough customers..

He also said ready for final turning, which Champeau doesn't offer...

I hear you.
I just placed an order for the AA.

Thank all of you for the information. I too have worked with Joe and was a little less than impressed with his brashness. He comes highly recommended but I have a hard time sending someone money when they act like they could care less if you bought from them. If he gets someone down there that would like to take an order and manage a conversation with me like a professional, I would be more than happy to buy from him again. Until then, I will explore some of these other leads. Much appreciation to you all.

Do people really buy shafts from Atlas? I won't even buy their phenolics anymore. They've gone down the tubes.

Hi,

While you are entitled to your opinion and I respect that, IMO, Atlas Billiards is a World Class Operation and the people there, John, Eric and Mark are great concerning customer service and taking care of their customers 100%.

Phenolics are not manufactured for the pool building industry per say and todays phenolics are not as good concerning a finished product look as they once were for cue building and I agree with you on that. I am sure that this trend is due to some formula change that made it stronger or more chemical resistant. As I said it is not designed to be a finished component on a cue.

I had some issues with that very same subject and Eric was very truthful and gave me a education and replaced some material that had the white streaks.

Atlas is the sole supplier of Juma. It is about the same price point as Phenolic but it machines and finished 1000 time better that Phenolic and is very pure in color consistency. I don't use any phenolics on my cues any more because Juma is the Cat's Ass. It also engraves perfect concerning heat where phenolic was problematic for me in that area.

I also talked to the guys at Atlas and they are working on getting Juma in a brown Coco color in the future.

Atlas Billiards Rocks as a Supplier. IMO.
