Shane Van Boening draw stroke: wrist movement analyzed frame-by-frame

This is exactly the kind of thread where a bump is OK, for the theoretical concepts contained are as important today as then. A question that seems pertinent is whether Shane has made changes in his stroke delivery in the last twelve years.
I watched him closely live at the Texas Classic 3 weeks ago, and he was as freewheeling and wristy as ever, especially when warming up pre-match. His power draw and follow strokes are really something.

The only change I’ve noticed between 12 years ago and now is that he plays with that 9-10” extension on all the time now, vs gripping at the butt cap back then.

I have zero proof for this, but it appears to me that over the last few years SVB has attempted to change his stroke to a more "traditional", or "correct", stroke. And when he does, he doesn't fare as well. When he is winning, he seems to go back to his own wonky looking stroke.

Again, with zero proof, I think he let someone get into his head with this "proper" stroke business and it messed up his game.

He learned the game with his stroke. To change it now would mean decades of relearning what he already knows. In short, that would be criminal. The time for him to "correct" his stroke would have been 30+ years ago.

And I'm about as big of a stroke fundamentals proponent as there is.

You're not wrong. He used to be a more natural elbow dropper on all of his power strokes, sort of like Fedor. Once he put that extension on he started locking his elbow more. He really ends his follow through abruptly now on many power shots. It looks "snatchy" to me, if that's even a word.

I think it’s easier to drop your elbow when the heel of your hand can slip down behind the butt end of the cue at the end of the stroke, like it did when he played without an extension.
