Shane Van Boening's Record in 10-Ball Challenge Matches

Two more, at the DCC Indiana, when TAR was there streaming in the normal action room, before they got a dedicated room (I think...).

Shane played Efren a race to 20something 10 ball. It was for 50k. Shane won. Mars payed Efren 1k show up money, for Efren to play. It was sad seeing Efren miss balls he never did before, his age was showing. I think the final score was 21-17 or so.

A couple days later Shane played Busty the same way but for 5k range. Busty won. This was the match that the lights went off and we all joked that Efren hit the switch. I had a side bet on this match that won my an iPod, and I engraved on the back "Busty over Shane" ha ha ha.

Both matches were streamed, I watched them live.

I think this was about 2008.

I guess reading through this thread, Shane was not as dominant as we thought.

Shane got beat here and there for sure he has always taken chances in action. Not a locksmith

Yeah, he never ducked anyone, and always wanted to play the best.

Actually, the ONLY thing I have against Filler is he ducked Shane in 10 ball 5 years ago, and said he'd only play 9 ball.

I think in today's climate, Filler wins in either game. Race to 100 might be a different story though. I've never seen Filler run out of gas, race to 100 might be his forte. Filler beat James Aranas 100-72 about 4 years ago. No idea about any other long races by him though.

He also beat Tony Chohan in a 2-day event race to 21 in 1-pocket. He's got stamina for sure.

Would be fireworks to watch though. Could be one of the most hyped matches of our time.

Thanks. I did some research to fill in some details.
- The matches were in 2009 (DCC's first year in Indiana) in the TAR Pit.
- Van Boening beat Reyes 23-19 early in the morning of Jan. 27.
- Bustamante beat Van Boening 23-19 early in the morning of Feb.1.

I have edited Post #1 to include both matches.

For the purposes of the stats we should probably just include the matches that were advertised and/or streamed. That way there is or should be a visual record of the match in order to have the accurate stats without relying on memory.

I am sure Shane has had many action matches that weren't streamed or advertised. Just using the ones that were publicized in advance should be plenty to get a real good picture of how dominant he has been in the long race 10 ball format.

Let's also remember that SVB played in a bunch of 9 ball long races as well. Such as the time he played Donny Mills and was getting creamed by Donny's break while trying to copy it. Then he started breaking hard and came back to win the match.

Which brings up another question? It's there any archive of tar (the action report) matches anywhere other than in at large's computer?

Regarding dominance..... Maintaining a 9% performance edge, 54/46%, over the world's elite players in the long-race format is pretty dominant in my eyes.

Even now he doesn't duck anyone and has shown that he can win against the best in the world despite being twice their age. That's one of the wonderful things about playing pool that it's possible to retain elite status for a lot longer time than in a lot of other sports.

Yes, if you go to tours/events tab on the home page and type TAR, all the records are there.

I’m trying to figure that out/

There was no TAR going on, it was either the last year or next to the last year at the Riv. One of Charlie Williams events.

SVB met with Alex at around 8pm. I put up $5000, I had $20,000 in the safe deposit box at the casino. I couldn’t find the damn key to the box (it was in the main cage at the Riv). I wanted to bet $10,000. I found the key the next day between the frame and seat of my car which was in valet. So I only got $5,000 bet

I’m telling the story to demonstrate how clear I recall this.

It wasn’t being streamed. However someone was posting the score possibly here and other social media.

I was driving a white Bentley which I bought in January 2011. (That just popped into my brain) so had to be 2011 as I didn’t keep that car long. It was warm so may-June 2011.

When SVB got about to 24-25 games it was late 3am maybe. Cue Club is in a bad area, I played out of that room for years. I knew the $ was posted as I gave SVB $5000. I wasn’t there for that. I got there at 4ish and SVB had 32-33 games. He was clicking them off fast,

I decided to go meet him at Cue Club to get the $ to the car, being alone wasn’t a good plan. So I went out the back way of the Riv which was real close to Cue Club if you know the shortcuts

I got there SVB needed 5-6 games I’d guess. Alex was white as a ghost, shell shocked-I’ve never seen Alex look like that before or after that night.

40-20 was the final. 2 to 1 in games.

Went into the office with SVB we counted it down. We decided that I’d take the cash to the Riv (at that time someone else got robbed after a post on some site woke up the robbers and that didn’t end well) so SVB went out to his truck super fast and drove around the corner. I went to the Bentley super fast and met him around the corner. Took the short route back to the Riv. He didn’t know that route-we joked about him being a tourist in Vegas

Went to the room, how sweet it was. Counted it out, cut it up. Said good night and on to the next action.

Sorry for the long story but it was a fun time, real life chopping up the cash is never bad.

So yeas 90% sure it was 2011 spring or early summer. I kept that car maybe 18 months, I remember it was pretty new and crispy that trip-I drove out from LA. Slight chance it was 2012. I’m 100000% certain it was 11 or 12 and 90% it was 2011.

In the room I asked SVB how he won the session. He said he had his break working and Alex’s break was terrible, he kept getting kicked and couldn’t get anything started. 40-20 is a monster win over Alex playing any thing.

Best

Fatboy 😃
I always love your input. You have lived a full life with tons of great adventures. Congrats!!

My question is this....I am going to Vegas in a few weeks and thought about going to Griff's and/or the Cue Club. You mentioned that its not a safe area. I will take an Uber but will definitely be alone. Is that a safe trip for me as a tourist or am I better off to simply stay on the Strip? My hotel is MGM Grand so walking isnt an option. I would definitely take an Uber or taxi. I guess I am naive and view every neighborhood as well lit and somewhat patrolled like the Strip is.

Griff’s is in a reasonably safe area.

Cue Club has been a bad area since I moved to town in 91.

Inside either room you are just fine. I wouldn’t hesitate to go to either room. I have for years.

Nothing in Vegas is really walking distance.

The reason I met SVB at cue club was because I told him I’d come at the end of the night. There had also been a few incidents back then where people posted about large amounts of cash on social media and got robbed.

That match wasn’t streamed but it was play by play here I think and a few other places. It was known that SVB would be walking out with $75,000 or $70,000 what ever it was it was a big enough number to possibly attract the wrong attention.

So he walked out with zero to his truck. I was armed and walked to the Bentley with the cash-nobody knew I had it & SVB was safe. Just being cautious was all.

I would t worry about a thing at any pool room in Vegas, I wouldn’t hang out in the parking lot at night either without being armed. Walking in and out your fine

I swear I remember SVB VS Dennis playing 10b to 120 in OKC on two separate occasions at Bill's Billiards (now Mr. G's). I'll try to find more info

Go to Griffs, that's the only place I go.

Get dropped off at the door and don't hang outside, just seems shady out there sometimes and you never know who's walking by.
