Colin,
I confess I have always wanted to visit China; but I was a little put off by a documentary I saw yesterday called, "Red Corner."

Evidently Richard Gere was visiting Shanghai, when these evil business types set him up with this really hot Chinese girl. Though he did get to sleep with her, he awoke the next morning covered in blood, with the chick dead in the next room. Hell, he ended up in a really lousy Chinese prison.

If this could happen to a famous actor, what in the heck can an ordinary tourist like me expect??? I'm a little hesitant to make plans.

Which movie was that?

hehe...actually there is rarely any violence in this city. I feel much safer here wandering the streets late at night (as I often do:rolleyes: ) than I do in Australia, and Australia is a relatively safe place.

Colin,
I hate to disagree, but in Australia they have this completely anarchic society where all these really grubby biker types ride around in these crazy vehicles chasing guys that look like Mel Gibson, trying to rape his girlfriend and steal his gasoline. The documentary I saw on the subject (I think it was called "Mad Max" or "The Road Warrior", or something like that) looked like Australia was a really violent place.

Plus I never could understand that Australian rules football thing they used to show all the time on ESPN. The rules were COMPLETELY INCOMPREHENSIBLE to anyone sober. What was that all about?

Willie -

First of all "Red Corner" was a movie, where Richard Gere played an attorney visting Beijing, not Shanghai, where this fictitious episode took place. Is is not a documentary of something that actually happened to him.

I am a Caucasian American and I live in Shanghai also and have been here for most of the time since the early 90's. It is very safe, the people are great and gracious. It is nothing like what you may have seen or heard. The Chinese like Americans and will go out of their way to help you.

You will not be bothered by the authorities or anybody else and will have a great time. It is much easier to get through customs coming into China than in the US. Just be sure you have a valid tourist visa in your passport and everything else is easy.

There are not alot of high level 8 ball players here and this is probably a good opportunity to make a run at IPT qualification. Not for me, but for good players.

Willie knows that neither of those films are documentaries. He was simply using his dry wit to make a joke that you didn't get.

Yer more polite than I, who might have thought "hook, line and sinker".

Hey Colin, are you the man at the Challenge Table at this venue ? Just curious, as ever.

Hi Dave,
Yeah, I'll be the challenge guy at the venue as well as co-organizer. Should be some fun:-)

And to Willie: As for Mad Max, it's absolutely true, though I think it takes place about 20 years from now:D

btw: Don't let GADawg fool ya, he's a very handy player in our Shanghai League and teaches the young Chinese upstarts a thing or two about the game!

Sounds reasonable. He's never been here, but because he's a good guy with a good reputation, he must know a lot about it. Probably a good source for a second opinion if you're thinking about having open heart surgery too.

In my many years here, I have had over a hundred first time American business visitors and without exception each has said, "Wow, this is not what I expected at all!"

If people are afraid to come because of some misconception, nobody's feelings here will be hurt. I was just trying to be a good forum contributor and give some first hand knowledge for people who might be thinking of coming to play in the qualifier, but are nervous about China.

No skin off of my nose either way.

1st time ive posted ,but read the forums a lot,I think gawdog posts are highly informative, and now I have a new out look on china, sounds like a canny place, nice 1 gawddog.

Dawg-man,
Sorry for the confusion. I know NOTHING about China. I was just trying to be funny with Colin (he knows I know nothing about China). I was not trying to denigrate the Chinese in any way (the joke was supposed to be on ME), but I, like several other posters, use the forum not only for pool information and discussion, but also as entertainment. There are some seriously funny people posting here (just wish I was one of them).

Anyway, welcome to the forum; we appreciate and welcome your participation. The previous posters defending me (Nostroke and StraightPoolIU and DaveK) were NOT being serious. Everyone realizes that you and Colin obviously know what you are speaking of; no one should be taking my posts on this thread seriously.

P.S. - on serious note, I do plan to visit China in the next few years, if for no other reason than to whip Colin in a game or two of straight pool.

Aussie rules, or aerial ping pong as its sometimes known, is easy to understand, you get the ball, you kick the ball, you score between the posts!

American football on the other hand seems to be made up of Ad Breaks, with tiny little pieces of play between each:) .

That's great Willie,
By that time I should have opened my pool club which will be part of the BreakUp franchise, fully stocked with all the WillieBetMore accessories.

The entrance will be a 40 foot cast of BreakUp's head and you'll have to crawl in through his nostrils.

You'll be quite at home I'm sure:D

A Rose by any other name??

Perhaps they should consider changing the name of the place. After all, the word "shanghai" doesn't exactly have a pleasant connotation. Especially among the seafaring community.

Amen, brother.
