What is the best way to shape down a tip?

I recently put a Moori soft on my pre-dot Meucci shaft. It hit excellent and I could notice the difference in English. I shot much better with it as soon as the glue dried. The problem was, I couldnt get the tip right because all Moori has (atleast what Meuller sells) is 14mm tips and of course my Meucci is 13mm. I could just never get it shaped right and I could still see it was alittle too big for the ferrule even after many hours of sanding and using a cheap tip cutter (the TrueTip tip cutter).

I have a Sniper tip I'd like to try also and I have cut the Moori off because I'm having to change a cracked ferrule. Its also 14mm. Anyone have any tips to make life easier on me? Its rated at 66.9 compared to the Moori at 63.8. I want to go alittle harder so I think this Sniper will be my best bet but I dont want to destroy another tip trying to size it down.

They all are 14mm... Bro, If you have to have the ferrule replaced sent it to a cue maker, let Him/her, do the work for you, the money spent is well worth it and you get a much better job than you could do by hand (they have lathes) Id bet you'll be glad you did..

I cant find anyone local to do it, so thats why I'm doing it myself. Meuller is making me some ferrules to put on the shaft, I just have to get the tip thing straightened out. I guess I could just send them the shaft and get them to put everything on.:confused:
 
There was a very detailed post on this forum which gave step by step instructions for installing a new tip.. I don't have the link try the search.

Ryan will do the work for you. He works making cues for Mueller's and is know to do incredible work. Send it in, you'll be glad you did ;)
 
Rat at Muellers does good work and so does Kevin Varney. I've sent cues to both and with good results. Varney is in one of the Carolina's, Muellers in Nebraska.

I am aware, and could have suggested MANY others :) I just figured since he already has business with muellers (having ferrules made) he would just send it in and they would do both.:D

By the way Varney is located in what Carolina and where within that state?
 
If you want to sand, use a low grid sandpaper. After sanding it down to the exact size, use a high grid sandpaper to make it nice. I did it once, and it looks great (the cue maker did a worse job). But normally it's better to bring it to a cuemaker. Don't save those money, it's not worth it.

If you want to do it yourself...After you have glued the tip on and it is dry and secure, Get a utility razor knife with a new, sharp blade. Take the shaft and place it tip down on a table. Place the side of the blade flush to the ferrule and slide straight down and thru the tip, cutting off the excess, do this all the way around the tip making sure you keep the blade flush against the ferrule for a straight cut. Be gentle as to not cut into the ferrule on the way down. You can then finish with sand paper. Been doin it for years and they come out great. Good Luck!
 
Well the Tip ok, but installing a ferrule by hand is very hard to do, Ive done this twice, and both times the ferrule looked Barrell shaped, Oh yeah I fixed it, I ended up with a snooker shaft. 9mm maybe...lol


I would definately send the cue off to be fixed, just have the ferrule and tip installed at the same time, Meuller should do a fine job, I recomend the Mamoth ferrule, I tried one and its great, and stays clean, I would suggest otherwise but cutting a 14mm tip and ferrule down will take forever, and its extremely hard to make it right did I say Ive tried this twice? anyhow Ive warned you, GL!

I agree... sending it off and having a pro handle it is always best. especially with the ferrule problem.
 
I do all my own tips with my homemade shaft spinner, and none are as tricky as a Sniper. Great tip, but I highly recommend a pro to do the install as well as the ferrule. Do a search here, and you'll find numerous posts about Snipers delaminating due to inadequate installation techniques.
 
I would experiment around and find the tip you like the best, then STICK with that brand/hardness forever.

I frequently see players get a new different tip with a different tip shape, then their game goes out the window for awhile. It plays differently!

I prefer a Moori hard because I use a dime shaped tip and a hard tip will keep its shape longer.

Also I put my money where my tip is! Price is no object. I see a lot of players spend thousands on what the butt of their cue looks like or what the name says, but then they don't want to spend more than $5 for a tip!

The tip is the business end of the cue!

So get the right tools to do a good job of installing tips yourself or have a cue maker do it for you.

Then get a good sandpaper shaping tool (nickel or dime) and keep your tip the same shape. I find that always playing with the same exact tip, same brand, same hardness, same shape, will go a long way toward me being more consistent.

And if you always keep your tip the same shape, then when you install a new tip, it will have the same shape as the old tip. It will play the same...
