Shims

So, am I correct in assuming my new Diamond Professional will have pocket facings but no shims? I am getting the 4.75" corner pockets instead of the 4.5" pockets. Which means the rail rubber will be cut 1/4" less and then the facing goes over the rubber cushion.

And didn't shims years ago used to be sort of a charcoal type substance? And if so, is that what they use nowadays?
If you are buying a new table, it is much easier to buy tight pockets and make them bigger if needed. Much more work and cost to make large pockets smaller CORRECTLY. The question you need to ask yourself...is this a leisure time table or are you trying to become a pro...or something in the middle. If the pockets are too tight, you and your friends will not enjoy it.

Question regarding shims.

Do all tables have shims? Or do some tables just have the rubber cushions and the cloth goes over it?

In other words if you order a table - Olhausen, Brunswick, Diamond, etc - will it come with shims? Or just the rubber, whether it be Accu-Fast, SuperSpeed, or Artemis? And how does the plain rubber behave compared to shims?

And yes, I know if you want the pockets made smaller at some point the mechanic will use shims.

Facings son....facings.

Shims level.a table.

If you are ordering a new table....you should have specified the pocket size you wanted. Stacking facings makes pockets play dead, more balls hanging up and if a ball hits into the end of a side pocket facing it stops it about dead.

Shims are just pocket facings that are thicker or stacked to change pocket dimensions. So yes, all tables have "shims" but when shims are not used to change pocket dimensions they become "facings".

Nice work. Mind boggling after 40 years they haven't fixed their pocket angles.
I had my Olhausen modified to add 3/16 shims with 60 durometer hardness and it greatly reduced all rattles and also the pocket size a bit. I do think that there is a reason Olhausen sticks with its geometry, although it would be very nice to hear from them about this. I think it may be that, because of the springy nature of the Accu-Fast cushions, the 145 degree angle helps catch and pocket balls that would otherwise be missed. However it's all confusing because putting the shims on my table made it better.

Pool table physicists and Olhausen employees are encouraged to explain.

I'll ask again - those shims/facings that are used to make pockets smaller - what are they typically made of?

In the past I had a reputable table mechanic tell me they were made out of charcoal.

Do you know how to do a google search?
