Shipping cues

I'm shipping a few cues from Florida to Pa. It's hot in Florida and cold in Pa. It's either by car...they'll be in the trunk for about a week as the car is been shipped or in a UPS truck for 3 days. Any comments in which is the better/safer of the 2 or simply take my chances and hope for the best. Also shipping a decent leather case with them. Thanks.

Hi Kim...can't do that. The car is being transported by enclosed carrier. Need the trunk to conceal the cues. I realize cues get shipped everyday by every which way and get there in perfect condition. I could over night the package and insure it. Might be close to $175 insured

Most shippers do not insure collectables..at least Fed Ex for sure and UPS. However, that said, I always ship FED EX priority overnight for 10:30 del, signature required. I always ship in a cased bubble wrapped. I have never had a problem.

Before I retired, an employee packed a collectable knife wrong and FED EX broke it. I had insured it for $5 grand and FED EX refused to pay as a collectable. I blamed myself for not giving better packing instructions to double box the knife.

Why expose a package to several days of travel as an ordinary shipment?
 
FWIW, I use USPS priority mail almost exclusively for my business, and so far they have been 100% reliable. That's right..100%. Not one lost package, ever. I did have one go missing some years back for a few weeks, but it eventually showed up too.

When I shipped my cue back to McDermott for a little love, I went USPS priority and slept well. They ship it back UPS, and I help my breath a little.

Anyhow, not telling you what to do, but I've come to trust USPS priority mail. They're not perfect, but they've been extremely reliable for me.

They are not collectables. Modern but reasonably expensive. With case around $2200 value. Schon/Sly 2 Schmelkes and a JB case.

My only concern is the heat that damage can do. USPS has been great for me so far....until something needs to be tracked and that's that. Been there done that.
I could simply overnight the package. UPS quoted around $160...oh baby.

I do appreciate everyone's reply. It's UPS or Car.

but why not put them in the jb case bubble wrap and in a box send fed ex or ups
barton cases are supposed to protect your cues right??

I was thinking of leaving them at your house so you can teach how to play correctly. Correctly meaning a good trap. A good move. A good safe and definitely how to go 8 and out.

Just spit-balling here, but how about rolling them up in some insulation, then bubble wrap, before you put them in the trunk. That should reduce the temp variation, I would guess?

They will be in a Porper Cordura 4/8 and wrapped loosely with bubble wrap. (not to seal so there is breathing room) and shipped in the car trunk. Should something happen to them...I will simply replace and UPGRADE:grin:
 
Which is worse....extreme heat or 30-40degree weather. Cues are going to Pa in trunk of car. Will be in there for 5-6 days. Wish me luck:D:D
 
I had a friend who used to ship container loads full of cues from Taiwan to the mainland to be sold through Sears and other outlets all across the USA.

I'm quite sure the containers on the ships were no different than shipping something inside a car. It took sometimes weeks for the cues to arrive to destination and from what I would imagine, they weren't all warped and broken.

Personally, I've taken one of my playing cues all over the world with different tempertures and humidity....Philippines, Japan, Hawaii, Turkey, UK, and even the extreme cold of North Dakota and it has yet to warp, but I never had it in the trunk of a car for that long of a time.

They left Fri (the weather was not too hot). Buy now they are North somewhere and cold.
Oh well.. like I said if something goes wrong I will simply replace them with something bigger and better. :grin: Will follow up.
 
Made it. Slightly cold but straight no problems. Life is good

What I have found, is not that cues have warped, but...biggest worry, IMO, did the finish crack or crinkle. Most cues won't warp, but amazing what can happen to the finish when going from hot to cold over and over with added humidity.
