Sands Shootout CANCELLED!

I got a phone call today from the BCA and they told me the "Shootout At The Sands" Bar Table Tournament has been cancelled. Only little over 50 players had signed up and the Sands was going to add $15,000. but not enough players signed up in time to give the Sands a full count of who was coming.

This is sad for there would have been many more players paying late and paying at the gate. I mentioned that to her over the phone but the Sands had already pulled the plug. I also asked her if all of the BCA players knew about the tournament as well and she said they knew about it, but the turnout was too low to proceed.

I would suggest all of the players who signed up need to cancel their reservations with the Sands and the lady from the BCA that called is not putting through the charges on VISA's for the entry fee.

Another sad day for pool. I guess what we need to do in the future is get the players to sign up in advance with a deposit, then approach the Sands and say OK here is the list of players coming and we have 150+ players, then we would be set to go. I am not sure if 150 players is the magic number for the Sands but we can find out what they are looking for to make in work?

Why haven't they let the players know yet?

If it's cancelled then why haven't they let the players know?

My card was already charged, they would have to refund me.

This seems a little strange especially with as bad as Reno is hurting I would think they wouldn't want the bad publicity, besides people in the casino means people gambling, and these tourneys have a history of last minute entries and the Sands knows that...

well, I'm sure I'll hear something soon....

I'm looking at the BCAPL / CSI website. There is no mention of the event being cancelled. I'd call them directly rather than depending on your fellow posters.

Problem is "most players go to events in Vegas because it's a vacation, not a pool tournament". Holding major events in the center of the country just doesn't work! Ask the folks who ran the Windy City Open. Concurrently, the middle of the country appears to have many more local and regional tournaments than the coast(s). I'm tired of reading about events in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, etc. on the AZ board. Very, very little here in the Northeast.

The Shoot out at the Sands is cancelled, we are in the prosess of notifying the ones that did sign up. The event was cancelled by the Sands. Yes 50 people signed up and we probably could have gotten more at the gates but, thats 50 total like 18 in the 10-ball 25 in the 8-ball and a few in the womens events. Not nearly enough players to justify expenses and added money. We are very sorry

This sucks, oh well, but, I wonder when people in the pool world are going to realize that you cant promote a tourney and take entries ect.. then cancel because you dont think you are going to get enough people to make money. You have to earn the players respect and trust. So what, you dont make as much as you thought this year but I gaurantee word will get around that you still held the event and added the money that was advertised even with a low turn out and the next year you will be getting it all back plus. Well I guess its time to make phone calls I didnt want to make and cancel.

Good Luck next year, I know I wont be signing up early. Nate
And I am just a banger that was willing to donate.

Don't worry about signing up early. I am pretty sure the Sands won't be offering up that money again.

As far as the cancellation it was the Sands choice. they get to make that choice because it was their money that was going to get shot up in the air. This is the second event CSI received no support from the players. The other being Qlympics where the event did go on and in that case it was CSI money that got shot up in the air.

Personally I think the timing was very bad for this event and it was fighting an uphill battle from the very start.

I am glad they canceled. The only thing worse than a cancellation is staring at a 32 man board with more byes than names on it and wondering what you are gonna do for the next seven days. I spent 18 days at the Qlympics and I have no desire to relive that nightmare. Better to pull the pin, refund any money collected and move on.

Glad I saw this thread - I have to figure out how much it will cost me to cancel the plane ticket I purchased over a month ago for this trip.

After several years I get my wife to say unequivacably yes to going to a tourney, an out of state tourney at that....

It's going to be streamed by TAR.....

it's barboxes, so what.... I don't like playing barboxes, but I don't have a problem playing on them...

I schedule the hotel, and the entry fee. schedule for time off of work...

ALMOST, (thank God I didn't) schedule a rental car, cause it's too close to fly.

Then, ...blamo....,

ehhh wrong answer, it's been cancelled.

I was wondering why more people weren't talking about going....

It's a huge event with 15,000 added. why on earth wasn't everybody going, especially since it was on barboxes.

Rooms were $35 a night???? come on everyone complaining that the rooms at galveston are 130 a night or something, and they aren't going to Reno where they are a hundred bucks a night cheaper??

Was it that everyone is saving up for Galveston or what?

man it sucks to try and get anything off the ground in pool especially if this is what happens when you do.

I agree, where was the player support on this one???? Lots of money, great room rates.

Nate,

My question is, why was the December event cancelled in the first place? I used to look forward to Reno in December. Although I was not able to play in the USPPA event, I enjoyed watching some of the new young guns of the West play. Tony and his crew ran a great tournament. And Handicapped at that!

If the Sands was willing to put up $15,000 for this bar box event, they must have thought they could draw more than the 300 players the Winter event drew, in the Summer. Room rates were $19 per for the weekdays! I'm sad for the loss of that event, period.

The official announcement is just out:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Shootout At The Sands Cancelled
CueSports International, August 11, 2009

Due to low pre-registration, CSI regrettably announces the Shootout at the Sands, which was scheduled August 14-23, 2009, has been cancelled. These dates were the only dates available at the Sands in 2009. Both CSI and the management at the Sands are working together to reschedule the event for next year. The tournament featured several divisions, including an open doubles, men's 8-Ball, men's 10-Ball, women's 8-Ball and women's 10-Ball. The event did not have sufficient early entries to justify the generous $15,000 added by the host hotel, Terrible's Sands Regency Hotel and Casino, Reno, NV. All those who pre-registered have been contacted and their entry money refunded.

It was not an easy decision to make as the Terrible's Sands Hotel and Casino is a tremendous supporter of pool and has added hundreds of thousands of dollars to tournaments over the past 25 years including the U.S Bar Table Championships and the Reno Open. However, continuing its support of pool, the Terrible's Sands Regency in Reno will once again be hosting the 2010 U.S Bar Table Championships February 22-28. The well regarded event will be entering its 17th year.

CueSports International (CSI) is the parent company of the BCA Pool League, the USA Pool League and the National Championship Series (NCS). CSI also produces the U.S Bar Table Championships, the Jay Swanson Memorial and, coming in 2010, the U.S Open 10-Ball Championship.
