Basic lathe question - What do I need? Gonna start simple; no points or anything. Just tapering and coring for now. If you have pics of your set-up, let me see'em!!!!

A semester at your local community college in Machining 101 is what you should look at right now.
10 by 36 or by 40 lathes are serious machines.

i agree with joey.cuemaking is machinist work first and foremost.buy chris hightowers book.i would also recommend his deluxe lathe.it is a basic lathe and very user friendly especially if you are not familiar with a metal lathe. if you cant do school, find a machinist to teach you the basics asap.

Coring and tapering aren't 'simple' tasks. I actually think points are simpler to do than coring:grin:
Buy Chris's book and then go from there. A machine to do both those operations will need a good setup man, therefore a machining course, as mentioned by Joey, along with the Hightower book, and a lot of practice and wasting of materials will be in order, plus a $130 gundrill plus air compressor and Dust vacuum system. A quick change tool post, and lets not forget A good air resperator will be needed also, as most woods in this business are really bad to breathe in. If you buy a Hightower lathe at least you won't have to convert it to do poolcues like a general machinist lathe will require. and i recently bought all chris' DVD's and his Book and they are a must have for reference material, thats for sure.

you going to spend just as much on wood, epoxy, tips, ferrells, tooling, bits, more wood (and the list goes on and on) as you do on shop equipment.
