Short message from the Woodshed

Just a note from the Woodshed. I've been extremely busy at work and home over the past month and a half; only lurking here for a short period each day. I've decided to become the "anti-DCP", and after my lessons with Mark Wilson this past summer, I have been intensively practicing (almost NO playing) every spare minute at home. This has not exactly endeared me to my wife, but, what the heck, the kids are all in college now - it's time to freakin' learn how to play pool.

I've basically been doing the "Power Shot" drills to the exclusion of almost all else with the goal of refining and ingraining a decent and extremely precise stroke. These drills require about 45-60 minutes of intense concentrated practice, twice a day. I've completed 60 repetitions in 39 days of practice. It took 48 sessions of tinkering before I finally refined stance, grip, and stroke to its final form (close to perfect I hope), and will take a good 28 more sessions to ingrain.

As a note to DCP, through many slight modifications of stance I did not find any that seemed natural at first, and I found none that did not quickly become comfortable (though I avoided extreme positions that were painful in any way). I also am JUST IN THE PAST FEW DAYS feeling that I am on the right track; my stroke right now is better than I ever dreamed it would be. I also will tell you that it was extremely embarrassing playing pool in Peoria with J.Barretta, SJM, Zeeder, and Chef Jeff with a new, unrefined stroke (very early on in the process, probably only 70-80% of my previous speed); but that it is DEFINITELY worth working through the hard work and embarrassment to improve the precision and repeatability of your stroke. Of course this is after several lessons with Mark and Jerry over a year, so the adjustments become smaller and smaller; but the rewards seem to become greater and greater.

As another note, I've "played" NO pool except for 4 games of straight pool with a local top player (I won 3 out of 4). I've broken zero racks of 9-ball, and have runout zero times (and don't plan on trying). I have had zero bad breaks. My table plays PERFECTLY (except that as the cloth is aging it is getting ridiculously hard to cut a ball down the long rail into a corner pocket - and I'm loving it). I have thrown zero balls through my wall (haven't even felt like it). I'm still playing with the same cue as when I started 3 1/2 years ago, and I am planning on buying zero new cues. I am still using the same tip as when I started, and I plan on trying zero new ones this year. My game is so much better than a year ago I can't even believe it, and I give all the credit to Mark W., Jerry B., Danny D., Grady M., and my 2 local pro friends.

So long, I'm back to the Woodshed - straight pool league begins in 2 weeks and I've got a LOT of practice to do.

Nice plan and execution, Willie. This is a great example for all of us, not just DCP.

Btw, YOU were embarassed in Peoria?...geez what should ChefJeff feel like? :D

Question: Is all this work (and no play) making you happier?

Man do I feel like a lazy slug after reading that. As I recall your Drivermaker Invitational score was very impressive last year and you have improved since then. Congratulations! You serve as an example to all of us that proper instruction and hard work can pay off at any age.

cheers

What is "DCP"?

WW,
You mean "Who" is DCP? DCP=DrCuesProtege. I meant no criticism or disrespect to DCP, its just that I am totally committed to a fundamentally different approach to achieving excellence (perhaps mediocrity would be closer to the mark :) :) )

Chef-man,
Fortunately, the tables there were so un-freaking-believably awful that I don't think anyone realized exactly how spastic my stroke really was (it was the second time I picked up a cue after Mark Wilson completely changed my stance, grip, and stroke the week before). I had NO idea how to hold the cue, set up, or stroke the ball - other than that I was perfect :) :). Realistically I was probably playing 60-80% below my usual speed; I would say now I am probably 150% of my speed in July before the lessons with Mark. It's tough in any sport to work your way through the awkward stages after an instructor changes the way you do a certain thing - to me it is WELL worth it.

P.S. - The only reason I was able to beat JB spotting her the breaks was because I had come to the conclusion that there was something seriously wrong with those tables (I didn't know exactly what until that night when Zeeder and I started shooting the cue ball into the corners from different angles and found the funky facing problem) - I don't think JB ever played on tables that bad.

P.P.S. - even though it was embarassing to play below my usual level, I still very much enjoyed it (growing up playing golf, it is a very common experience to have off days - doesn't seem to happen in pool unless immediately following a lesson that involves stroke changes). A BAD DAY ON THE POOL TABLE BEATS A GOOD DAY IN THE OFFICE.

P.P.S. - In response to your question: the work at the office does not make me much happier (though it is rewarding in several ways); the work at practicing on the table I LOVE. It's hard to imagine how players that hate practicing ever achieve excellence.

Man Willie, I've not been able/willing to practice much here as of late, but I still think that I'm improving, albeit very slowly. I need to get back over to Mark's as well. Perhaps I'll do that during Thanksgiving break again like I did last year!!

Lord knows that I have to do something so I can at least have a chance to get a ball or two next time we get to play some straight!

Z,
Just one sound word of advice when you head back to Mark's - TAKE A FREAKIN' CUE!!!!!!!
Seriously, good luck. I'll be heading back this Fall or Winter - I'll let you know when I have a definite plan.

You're never going to let me live that down are you...lol. I can almost guarantee you that you will never see me without a cue again! :D :D

Definitely let me know when you'll be in the area and I'll be sure to come be your punching bag for a game or two!

*Ahem* Don't forget to add San Diego to your list of cue-less shame!

Figured that picture in your basement of Alfredo DeOro would inspire you, too, Willie.

Sounds like you're in just the frame of mind to continue advancing as a player. Thanks for the advance warning, I'll make sure I practice hard before Peoria 2006.

Good luck with your game, Willie.

AD,
Are you telling me seriously that the big guy did NOT bring a cue to San Diego with him. Ohhh... the shame, the shame. On second thought, maybe he doesn't really have a cue; probably just borrows whatever is available like Buddy Hall did in his gambling days (of course I'm running out of other similarities between zeeder and Buddy :) :) ).

Zeeder, you need to get your act together.

SJM,
Try not to worry too much; with 2 hours a day for another 30 years I figure I ought to just about reach "well below average" status.

P.S. - I'm not positive, but I think on several occasions out of the corner of my eye I've actually glimpsed Alfredo cringing after I uncorked one of my especially hideous stroke spasms. It's starting to scare me; none of my other photographs seem to behave so disrespectfully.

I admit it, I didn't bring any cues to San Diego either. :( What makes it worse is the fact that I had even signed up to play in the Pro-Am...lol. I had to borrow my friends crooked McDermott with a horribly shaped tip. Oh well, I've shamed myself such that I will have to carry cues with me everywhere from now on in the off chance that I may run into someone from this board!

You can bet your binky that I'll have a cue in Peoria next year! I'll bring my cues to SD too if my friend still lives there next year and I can muster up the cash for the trip.
