Here is a pic of 7 fancy inlaid South West's I was offered by the late John Wright..

I was offered them at $2700 a piece if I bought them all! :eek:

How I wish l could have pulled that deal together...:(

My favorite is No.39


 
That would be a world class collect today, but was a lot of money back then!

Super cool post.................I was always super excited to get the pictures from John. At the time, I was enthralled with the Josswest's he would get. Up until the time I figured out the cuemaker's personality. Well, that's a different story.

John was a classic. He would come to all the tournaments in the Chicagoland area and display his cues for sale. If you were lucky you could go to his house where he would open the safes and let you hit balls for hours in his basement. I was on his mailing list for a long time. I wish I had all the pictures back. For me, #40 please.
 
John was truly a gentleman and one of the reasons cue collecting is what it is today...if he were only alive to see the fruits of his labor (and influence). It's been more than 10 years since his passing...
 
John was a very interesting person to talk to. He knew what the collectors of that day wanted even down to how far the rubber bumper stuck out. He once called me saying he had a customer in Japan that wanted one of my fancier ebony cues. I told him I did not have one ready at that time and told him what I did have ready. I mailed him some pictures and in a few days he called back saying his fax machine just rang with a fax saying the guy wanted the cue. John had to go through a lot of trouble to sell cues back then. Pictures were always mailed or faxed. The fact he said the fax machine just rang has always stuck with me for some reason. Now we have internet available everywhere and most of us have websites and such.

I had the opportunity to buy a new SW Dove Cue from SW once when visiting Las Vegas around 1990 or 1991. I couldn't scrape together $2000 cash to buy it while I was there.

I bought my first Southwest from John. It was a Franklin with Ebony and curly maple and red, black and natural veneers. I was the beginning of my addiction.

I did too. John and I used to work at the Board of Trade in Chicago. He would come down to the Atrium around noon every day where I'd usually see him carrying a nice 12 by 24 case. It was always filled with nice cues. He opened it up one time and showed me 6 new Kersenbrocks. I bought and ebony front 3 high 3 low with rosewood point and a single green veneer... I bought that one on the spot... Later to find out it probably was a SW..lol... I guess John was selling them as SW since David worked in the SW shop..
