my vision is not so good but a friend showed me a cue that had amboyna burl points but at the base of the points the red/orange /brown color turned into a sandy white color different amounts and shape in each point base
a striking difference to the rest of the color of the point
i understand there can be brown in ebony
what about this???

The colors in an ambvoyna burl run from dark reddish tan through the tans to a light golden tan. The husk or sap wood of the burl was whitish tan and like most exotic woods it is usually discarded. It is the heart wood of these trees and burls that is treasured. The sap wood is stable and some people use it for a visual effect.

There is golden Amboyna which is a yellowish color. Its also called Maidou burl.... and probably has several other local names. Some of it is actually more beautiful than the red/orange stuff....IMO

I have several slabs of Amboyna burl and the color changes going across the slab from almost red to a plain color about like maple. The red center is the most desirable, but also the hardest to get a piece of that color large enough to make a cue with. That is why most of the really red Amboyna you see has been dyed. So the two tone Amboyna is very common. It is probably more common than solid colors of any shade.

Hi,

Sometime the ugly duckling turn into the most beautiful swan.

There is a reason Rolls Royce use this stuff to trim there cars out. It is the best looking wood IMO.

Its nice, but far from the best....and actually pretty common

It is good looking and reasonably common and that is why Rolls Royce uses it. If they couldn't get it they couldn't offer it. Bentley uses a lot of birdseye which they buy by the # of birdseyes per unit area, allowing matching wood in different cars.

What can be hard is to get a consistently colored and grained piece 13" long that is free from imperfections. There are ways to correct these flaws in veneers and these techniques have been widely used for hundreds of years.

those are very educational pictures for me to see amboyna "naked"

the 5th board from the left
is reddish until the bottom where it is whitish (simplistic descriptions )
would anyone make points for a customer who wanted amboyna points

where each of the 4 points had the red on top and varying degrees of the white at the base of the points??
