Should I Use a "burnisher" for my tips?

I use spit and a 3x5 index card. Never once had a problem
That's pretty hi-tech - I have been using the same piece of cardboard
for years.
The tip burnishing liquid is good stuff. Works better than that good ol' fashioned high quality spit and worth every penny IMO.

Been using since they put it on the market. Wouldn't do it any other way.
The burnished leather forms a crust that will out last any home remedy.

I always used spit or a little oil from just whiping my finger behind my ear. What I like to do when I first put on a tip the most is use an Iron on a low/med setting and wet the sides of the tip and I bake that FOOL lol. My elkmasters dam near hold up like triangles, which is great so I don't have everyone complaining about mushrooming when I put on a soft tip. BUT BE CAREFUL....I've never messed up doing this but I'm super careful at this and like to wrap the ferrulle with some masking tape to protect it. After the sides are hard in just a few passes, I like to hit it with a fine grit very light and then burnish it with a lil bit o skin oil and a piece of leather, wala beautiful shiny burnished tip that hold up great. Try it on a cheap cue or some old shaft and see for yourself, it really does work very well.

That is what I use. Let me know if you need any. There are 2 flavors: brown and regular transparent color. They work great!
I like tigers hard wax or carnuaba wax. It depends on the tip hardness to me. The harder tips I use tiger burnisher liquid, the softer tips I use the Tiger wax/Carnuaba wax it seems beef up the tips sidewalls a little bit more. so far no mushrooming and the wax solution leaves a nice finish on the sidewall for a long time.
