Hi there everyone,

I've been putting this surgery off so I can play one more tournament and then one more and then one more.

I must be a pool player. It seems we all think if we can still swing the arm that we can still do it.

About a 14 months ago I fell off a porch with bad steps on it and didn't realize I was falling until me head was just about to hit the concrete. Just barely got my arm and elbow up in time to save my head. It was dark out and I thought I was on the last step when there was still this stupid little half step to go. I was kind of turning around as I was stepping. I knew I really wrecked something because I've broken bones before and busted up a knee real bad twice and this hurt right up to the top of my head. I knew something bad had happened.

The next day I went for x-rays thinking something had to be broke. It was negative. In 1995 I dislocated my left shoulder and it was down in my armpit. About 2 to 3 months of hard work it got better and then every month after that even better until finally it's as good as new. So I'm kind of thinking maybe this would heal also. It hasn't. It got a litte better but then started getting worse and now it just seems to stay the same. Just painful kind of all the time. If I use it too much the real painful.

Not so lucky with this. MRI showed no tears on the rotator cuff. I was quite surprised. Then as my doctor was moving my shoulder around it was pretty clear that I've busted up the cartilage. I fell in a way that when my elbow hit the cement it kind of shoved my arm straight up into my shoulder.

It makes sense that it is cartilage because it will throbb sometimes like a tooth ache and there seems to be no way to stop it. I've only been playing pool when I'm in a tournament for the past 3 months because to practice just flairs it up real bad. Playing without practice can be a little tough in tournament play. You need to practice. Sometimes just putting my socks on flairs it up.

I know there has to be someone on AZ that has done the same thing to the cartilage in the shoulder. I have alot of question?

How long is the recovery, did it all come back. My doctor says 90%?
The biggy is how long before you could play alot again?:yikes:

So if someone that has been through this could let me know what they went through I'd sure appreciate it.

I've rescheduled my surgery 2 times already. My doctor just loves me. I've made up my mind that this fri will be it. Not looking forward to it at all. No more pool for awhile.

But I guess there is a silver lining in every cloud. I can really concentrate on only teaching. At least I'll still be doing pool. :idea2::clapping:

Thanks Geno..........

I injured my shoulder in the late 80's. I waited 2 years before getting surgery. Mine was a subluxation which would cause my shoulder to separate at any time. I was hoping they only would do an arthroscopic procedure, but when he scoped it the damage was too extensive and he had to open up the shoulder. I attribute this to putting off what i should had done years earlier.

The surgery was the best thing I did. I was in a shoulder harness for about a week, and then started with physical therapy.

Gene, be prepared for a lot of work, take the physical therapy sessions seriously and put the work into it. The more you put in, the better your range of motion will be.

When I saw your thread Gene I thought I could tell you a lot but my injury was a massive rotator cuff tear so a little different animal I think. Shoulders do take a long time to heal and the recovery can be pretty painful for a while but I'm about 1 year out from mine and doing really well. You feel pretty crappy for a few days but like the others say follow your PT advise and appreciate the small gains you make every day of your recovery. Oh yeah, get a pair of slip on shoes because you will live in them for a while. Best of luck to you.

I hate to hear this Gene. I havent had any surgery like you are talking so I have no advice there (although I was once hit by a train LOL).

Get the surgery, and enjoy the time to help others as you recover.

Take care my friend!
