Shy but wants to play

sometimes harder is better . . . to a point . . .

remember that I qualified that with "if the table is level and true" & "(as long as you don't give 'em weird english)" ; the ball going off track is usually due to one or both of those factors . Yes , on an irregular playing surface , speed can overcome this as the ball will "hydroplane" over the obstacle . Likewise , speed will help overcome 'unintentional' english , as the english will not 'take' , or effect , the ball until it starts to slow down . Sadly , it's one of the reasons bangers can make shots at all !
I was recommending shooting the shots slowly in practice so that you can observe the ball on the first four inches of it's travel - on a full speed shot , it's almost impossible for the shooter to consciously see the first four inches of travel - it happens too fast ! This was intended as a practice drill - once you've gotten to where you're controlling that first four inches consistently , you can bring the speed up for match play.
Remember , I said the goal was smoooth , not necessarily slow . Sorry if I wasn't 100% clear on that !;)

I'm sure I have a ton of 'unintentional English' on the CB at this stage in my game and that's why the slower rolls go a little off. Thanks for the detailed lesson.....it's in a language I can understand, too.

I'll try your drills tonight. I'll be on the larger table all night.

Thanks for the visual, Dagwoodz. That makes it easy to understand.

I did okay tonight, rolled some in slo-mo, fired some in over lots o' green, and made a lot of 6 ball runs.....but could never find that last ball, ahr!.....all in all a good night of practice over 5 hours. Short night, I'm up early tomorrow.

Pool is so fantastic! I wish I had found this game earlier in life! I can't wait for the snow to fly so I can ski all day and shoot pool at night. LIFE IS GOOD!:grin-square:

Last night's games:

Game 1: 4 balls
Game 2: Won
Game 3: Won
Game 4: 5 balls

Total 29 out of a possible 40. Am I a pool player yet, or still a banger and should go join an APA league as soon as possible?:grin-square:

You joined the forum looking for a ray of sunshine. The members helped you out of a dark corner to a bright window. You found your way into the sunlight and you're starting to blossom!

Its been what a few months? Ups and downs are normal. All it takes is a good attitude and a desire to learn. You possess both and one day a mentor will find you.

I think short term realistic goals are helpful. They can take you well beyond your original goal. Pool is a lifetime sport, so go for it and don't look back. One thing for sure, it beats learning to sky dive from 10 feet.

Last night's scores:
Game 1: 7 balls
Game 2: 5 balls
Game 3: 5 balls
Game 4: won

I played 2 level 8 shooters last night. Can you guess which scores those are from?:o

I'm rated a 7 after 6 weeks of play. I think that's too high, but what do I know.

My friend who shoots in an APA league is frustrated because she's rated a 6 and level 3 shooters are beating her. I said, "Wait till they split your team up." She swore they would NEVER move them around, "They Can't Split Up Our Team." I'm waiting. ;)

I'll start with your question from last week- never can tell from paper stats if someone is a banger . Paper lies .
You did seem to do better last week , though !
I know APA's not your cup of cocoa , but you're coming awful close to APA bashing , and we agreed not to make this another APA bashing thread .
Lot of top amateurs play APA because it's the only game in town .
Where I'm from , the last 3 ( count 'em -3! ) BCAPL L.O.'s absconded with the money , leaving the players high & dry . Nothing national could do about it .
rights to VNEA in this area belong to the local Brunswick dealer , and he's just sitting on them .
People are always talking about TAP here , especially when their finals were in Orlando , but no action yet . . .
So we're stuck - APA or nothing .
If you're friends captain set the team up right in the beginning , no , it won't have to split up - it's the beauty of the APA 8 (wo)man roster .
If she needs assistance on how to handle that , have her PM me.

Hate to tell you this but you are still a banger. For someone that doesn't
want to bash the APA, you seem to do it every chance you get.
It is hilarious how you give others advice on a league you have never even
played a match in. I guess ignorance is bliss. Thanks for not joining. Bye

I guess I don't understand the question.......How do you set one up 'right'?

There are good and bad people everywhere.

in BCA , the strength of your team doesn't matter - find as many heavy hitters as you'd like .
In the APA , with the 23 rule , you have to find a balance of talent , and you have to accept that not everyone may play every week .
That's the beauty of an 8 person roster to play a 5 match tournament
I'm not saying sandbag to keep handicaps down - oh no .
I'm saying that you have to balance the team with promising beginners (bangers , if you will ) who can be used to fill out the 23.
Remember , in APA 8ball , it's a team race to 3 match wins . So I want at least three solid players , and two "let's hopes".
A really strong APA roster would be 7, 6, 6, 6, 4 , 3 , 2 , 2
with this roster , I'd actually sit the 7 most weeks , and play
6 , 6 , 6 , 3 , 2
i could play
7 , 6 , 6 , 2 , 2
keep that 4 , cuz thats the giant killer handicap - he gets a 2-5 race against their 7 , and a 4 is just good enough to luck into 2 games sometimes .
The 7 will never move - he's maxed out
experienced 6's usually hit a plateau , and for whatever reason , they're stuck there
Choosing a 4 that has competed for a long time is tricky
the s/l 2's will be in the most danger of being raised
BUT - - - - remember , it's a TEAM competition , and the team has to learn to adjust the way it plays! It's not about the egos of the better players (if I can't shoot every week , why am i here ?)
even if both 2s get raised , the 3 get raised , and the 4 gets raised
you can now play
6, 6 , 5 ,3 , 3 or
7, 6 ,4, 3 , 3
you just have to rotate using your highest skilled players - they're still strong rosters - remember , the other team is limited to 23 also . . . .
Why am I going into all this on this thread ? You don't play APA (but you did ask . . . ) I could literally write a book on APA strategy
someone once said to me that APA pool is nig_ _r pool because of the safety play
If that's true , then chess is nig_ _r checkers . . . .
If your friend wants specific advice , have her PM me . This conversation might even go way faster by phone , and I won't have to spell check anything . . . .

I like to think I'm one of the good people - maybe I'm just fooling myself

Hey, there was a misunderstanding there........I meant there are good and bad people everywhere for taking the money and splitting with it. ("Where I'm from , the last 3 ( count 'em -3! ) BCAPL L.O.'s absconded with the money , leaving the players high & dry . Nothing national could do about it ".)

That just stinks.

And I understand how APA works.......I don't think she does. She went from an s/l 3 last session to 5 now and she's pissed about it. Not my concern, I just like to hear her *****.:p

I guess I just like to play my best game all the time against other people playing their best game all the time, regardless of ranking. I don't mind getting my ass tromped every week. Actually, I'm getting better and I really feel good when I win, because these guys are Tough to beat.

I don't want to sit out because I got better, or sit out because the team's ability level has to 'add up to a certain number' so we can compete. I want to play every week. I want to play people who have no problem kicking my ass. I'm selfish and masochistic.

I play with people who rarely lose a game. Their skills impress me. I watch them, I learn from them. I don't know how much I'm going to learn from someone who doesn't know how to hold a cue........and I'm not really interested in playing those guys in a competitive setting. For fun, sure! I'll play with anyone. And I'm sure the rest of the teams look at me as an easy win, but be sharp: I'm the weasel in the corn. It's a mistake to let your guard down and I teach them this lesson.

But when I'm on a league, I look at the extra money I pay as sort of a lesson. I pay $1.50 a game and I'm learning by watching. I've already won more games this season in 6 weeks than all of last season. I must be doing something right.

Let's agree to disagree. APA is great for lots of people. It just isn't what I want right now.

We're still web buds.

I read all of your posts Skiergirl. It sounds like you have progressed really well.

Dippy Dave and I are waiting for you to challenge us to some money matches. We are bumbling amateurs and can't wait to play you for some dough.

I am rated a 5 in the APA and don't even want to talk about the BCA.

OH HAHAHA! Me......play anyone for money!!?? Let's save time....send me your address and I'll send you money.
:killingme:

And I'm such a banger it isn't funny, but every once in a while I get in the zone and I can slop them in fairly well. Those are the days I just don't go home till the bar closes.

Want to beat me? Get me on a 9 foot table. After playing on 7 and 8 foot tables for the last few months, I started playing weekly on 9 footers, and it isn't pretty. Ooooh boy. I gotta get more time on the larger tables and less on the smaller. I can see a difference right away after a few hours on the bigger table.

I wish I were wealthy enough to play a lot. Sigh.

One thing for sure, it beats learning to sky dive from 10 feet.

Rod

My chute didn't open. How does that saying go? "Anyone can skydive once. The trick is doing it twice." Something like that.:o

No longer hobbling, healed up well, onward ho!

Played the first place team last night.....did not do so well. It was the worst total since I started in June. These guys are tough......one 8 and three 9 level shooters.

Game 1: 6 balls
Game 2: 7 balls (missed the 8...and a derby:()
Game 3: 1 ball (never got a shot in after the break)
Game 4: 2 balls

In the third game, I played a guy who rarely misses. I was lucky to get one. The last game, well, there's no excuse. I just missed and never got back to the table.

I need more practice.

There's been many questions over the last few months as to my gender.....am I really a 'girl'? Yes, I reallly am a skiing (and pool playing) girl. At the risk of all the 'you're not hot' comments (I get these at the ski website, but damn, I'm 55!!), I'll post a picture on my One Year Anniversary for playing pool. Let's hope the speculation ends here.

Keep in mind, this was early on Halloween evening. Here's me in a tux, getting ready to shoot. The camera caught me before I made my bridge, so keep the analysis to a minimum.

And one with my boyfriend, dressed as "What She Looks Like At 6AM"....skulking through the background like Bigfoot.

I never questioned your gender, I mean only a girl would rack 14-1 that way! lol BTW Your stance looks pretty good for an upright player.

I've got a lot of injuries and I don't move as fluidly as I used to. I'm lucky to get that amount of angle....... Age is a *****. :o
