Side action at the US Open?

Other than the main tournament, is there anywhere to play side games at the US Open?

For the players that get knocked out early, is there anything for them to do other than spectate?

The year I went there were no tables at the venue that could be used for action. The closest pool hall looked like a 30-minute drive but I didn't go to one. You might have to go as far as Philadelphia.

Yikes. Seems like action tables would be standard. But it's the US Open, not some regional tourney. Plenty of other things to do.

Other than watch the matches, I didn't find a lot to do, I don't gamble so the casino was of no use. Atlantic City itself is not the sort of town that you want to spend a lot of time in. ;)

For me, there is a lot more to do in Norfolk (International Open) and Q-Master is pretty close with 70-some tables.

Events that bring in tables to hotels and convention centers usually don't have an action room. Exceptions are the SBE and the DCC. None of the Matchroom-produced events has an action area that I've seen. The International Open has two or three tables near the lobby for practice but I've never noticed action there.

Their is the AC Billiard club it about 20 minutes away. I don't think it's going to make that place have anymore action

Hm, now I am a little disappointed :) Would that change, now that they offer those FDM classes with the Mosconi Coaches?

We just made plans to got for Friday and Saturday. How do they handle walk-in spectators on the final day? There were only wheelchair seats left for day passes. Anybody know?

Not at events like that, DCC maybe, or SBE where half the draw is the gambling. US Open and other events like that are geared towards trying to give pool a cleaner image. I would not be surprised to see rules in the tournament agreements to the players about gambling or even discussing gambling in some area. Imagine Earl barking at some player for a set by the TV arena? Even 20/30 years ago they did not want to have much talk about hustling/gambling on the AccuStats videos, whenever Grady or someone would say a few things they tended to kill the conversation quickly or tried to hide it by saying "they played for a hot dog".

Hey Hang-the-9, your post reminds me of a recent post about the seedy side of Pool and gambling in Pool, well this is just one mans opinion;

Pool doesn't really have a seedy reputation, not really. The American players have the seedy reputation and thats wha stains the game. There are players from every country that gamble and play in tournaments that are still highly admired and respected, they coach and produce self improvement videos. These same players from Japan, China, Taiwan, The Philippines, Europe and many other countries contribute to the game in a positive way.

The gambling is really irrelevant. If we could get a few more players that are marketable like Shane, Tyler, Josh or Oscar I think the game could game a much needed financial boost and the players really deserve the opportunity to earn a real living from this sport.

I would be a sad day indeed if a Matchroom event had an action room. Given what Matchroom stands for, I'm not too worried about this possible eventuality.

Why do they need an 'action table' anyway? Anyone content to gamble is going to go and find a table elsewhere anyway... a 30 minute+ drive is irrelevant when there is money on the table and you're out of the competition... As was the case in any event I've seen... and from my discussion with a couple of people, far beyond my skill level that I've spoken to... If you're that way inclined, then you find a way...

Some people were driving at least an hour in a Didi to find a game once KO of the China open recently...

NJ convention center has trains to take you to NYC. Driving is not advised.

NYC has 24 hour everything. Not all poolrooms have same hours.

NJ has poolrooms but taxi service is needed from train stations or bus depot.

If you win have them pay for transportation.

Do not fall asleep on the train and miss your stop. Have transportation waiting for you.

Helo transportation is very common in the tri state area as well.

Speedboats are also popular transportation.

Do not drive.

Happy Hunting.

I've lived in NJ for well over 50 years, and had no idea just how bad it was to drive.
I guess I'm lucky to have escaped with my life!

Speedboats?????????

I have import export stories. But that is not for this forum. WPA officials or WCBS officials deserve the best for governing the sport. Let the players pay for it.

You should go back to sleep, wake up in a few hours then try starting again - your brain needs a reboot

One thing I will agree with, as far as Atlantic City goes, when you cross over Atlantic Ave going away from the beach, you are essentially in enemy territory.
Every inch of AC is enemy territory. I don't like walking down the boardwalk 15 minutes before sunset
