The greatest living pool player in the world, as named in 2000 by Billiard Digest, will host an exhibition at the oldest running billiard hall in the Rochester area.

Former Irondequoit resident Mike Sigel will visit East Ridge Billiards for a 7 p.m. appearance at East Ridge Billiards, 529 E. Ridge Road.

The business, which opened in 1960, now has a new owner.

Brighton High graduate and Irondequoit resident Christopher Braiman took over the business back in October, repairing each of its 22 tables, updating the decor and adding new a menu and additional leagues.

During his professional career, Sigel won 107 professional tournaments, including 6 U.S. Opens and 10 World Championships. He was named player of the year four times, and in 1987 — when he was just 35 — was inducted into the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame.

He excelled at both 8-ball and straight pool, but his best game may have been 9-ball. That was the game featured in the 1986 film The Color of Money, for which Sigel served as the technical adviser and pool instructor. He worked with stars Paul Newman and Tom Cruise, teaching them some of the shots and performing the rest of them himself.

Sigel retired from full-time play in 1994, producing a series of instructional DVDs and launching his own line of pool cues. He lives in Florida but still visits the Rochester area.

Sigel's trademark photo is the bent-cue break shot. :grin-square:

Cool read JAM! My dad actually beat Mike in an exhibition match way back when he used to live in Towson lol. Also, with that pic - I see quite a few players do that from time to time. Do you think that contributes to the warpage or rollout on the secondary market?

Looks like a normal Meucci cue to me.

Great video on the link.
Thanks for the heads up.
Too bad I'm stuck at work until 8pm. Gotta miss this one.

Jen,

Was there last night. Nice to see Mike. Several people I've not seen in years also stopped by. Some guy showed up in one of Keith's tee shirts  . Mike brought Spencer and Trevor along and Spencer remembered me. To say the least I was both shocked and pleased. I'll be there tonight as Chris needs the support of all the local players as well as folks nearby. Thanks for posting the link!

That sure is one handsome dude who's wearing Keith's T-shirt in that video.

Hi Jen,

A small crowd of about thirty people watched Mike put on a show last night. Some lesson, some reminscing and a few trick shots kept the group rivited. Sure helped it was the first pool room he played it. Brought back memories of happenings I'd forgotten. Mike signed a second picture of him on the "wall of fame". Like the one you posted with the bent shaft.

On behalf of Chris Braiman and his staff, thank you so much for posting the link. Once you see the room first hand, you'll understand the love he's put into East Ridge Billiards. A fifty six year old pool room with a bright future.

Lyn
