Silver or metal for veneers

Just curious, how hard would it he to use metal or silver for veneers? I think I could just think the metal will tear out when cutting the cue to size. Has anyone done it and if so any tips? Thanks in advance.

I once saw a guy who used brass sheet as a veneer in a English style snooker cue. It weighed a ton! looked pretty though.

I put thought into this to do myself

buy some .030 aluminum say 2 inch by 10 inch x 4 pieces

sandblast both sides take to a fab shop and have bent to a

90 then put in with your points veneers ect

then wait for the customer to call cause the point fell out

i chickened out if it was for my cue id give it a try

not something id risk selling

Even if you got an accurate bend, you still have to allow for 'setback'. Setback is the gap at the outside of the bend. You wouldn't have a 90 degree angle at the bottom of the AL either, as a bent piece would give you a curve.

The only problem I see is that with any metal used in a cue if it is not kept under perfect temperature control the expansion and contraction would really screw up the forearms finish. Metal, all metal that is finished over seems to move over time, I could be wrong but I think most of the movement is due to the above.

Most have seen cues where the metal rings have caused the finish to fail, I suspect that similar problems would occur the length of the veneer over time, which would make for an ugly cue.

I am in total agreement

Thanks for the responses, I didn't even think of finish "pop". Was thinking of getting strips and gluing up like stacked veneers. If I do it I will post pics.

Sheldon Lebow built a very nice looking cue with a silver veneer. Aluminum doesn't glue well. Silver does glue better.

I agree with the natural tendency of metal to react very quickly with temperature and

moisture changes.

In fact, I just spoke with Dan Janes in reference to a cue I just recently purchased, this is a One of a Kind JOSS cue with high grade ebony and numerous silver rings, both single and double rings. Dan stated he has only done this process a couple of times because in time if the cue is not perfectly maintained, the cleacoat over the rings will raise the clear. The cue I have was signed by Dan and this cue was made 8 years ago and luckily there has been no movement of the metal rings, hence, no raising of the clearcoat, knock on wood, so far!!!!!

Anyway, that is my input.

But, I DIGRESS, another cue-maker i have known for over 30 years is a master of the use of metal rings and somehow he has not had a problem with movement and I have never gotten an explaination of this.

The Master Cuemaker I am referring to is, KEITH Hannsen of Keith Kustom Cues' of the Dakotas'.

Anyway, if you have seen his work, he uses a lot of Brass and 24k Gold rings as well as Bone, Ivory and other Animal components, and this makes sense, since he is a master hunter, in fact, he has retired a couple of times from the Cue making world, to spend all his time hunting.

But, I have numerous cues of his from the late 70's through the mid 90's and none of these examples have lifted the clear as it were.

HOW? I dont know, it could be the type of clear or the preparation or the type of alloy or metals he uses. But the difference between, Brass, Gold, Silver and Nickle and Chrome-----all different in there own ways!!!

Any feedback would be appreciated!!
