I saw an episode of "The Rifleman" (with the fine actor Chuck Connors, who also was a fine athlete) where Mark Twain came to North Fork. In one scene there is a real mouthy character in the billiard room (a 3-cushion table) at the saloon who insults Twain. Twain offers him a wager. He says the man can set up any billiard shot he wants and Twain will make it (we are told by Mark McCain that billiards is Twain's hobby). I forget what the bet was, but I remember the shot. The man placed the red and the white in opposite corners on the short rail of the table. Twain steps up, places the cue ball near the white and strokes a nice 4 rail billiard right into the red.
I recall "The Honeymooners" episode where Art Carney and Gleason play pool. Gleason lines up a shot, misses badly, then mutters "table's off"...
The Rifleman wager was $70
They play a game later in the episode for $100, and Twain dumps, so Mark McCain will not idolize him. Mark convinces him to play again, Twain agrees and puts up his pocket watch. Twain easily wins.
Yes, I replied to an 11 year old post.
Some of us just stumbled on to this great thread about tv shows from 1/2 century ago.
Love it.
