Gotta give credit where credit is due. In an all-AZB matchup, HobokenAPA, who has really caught the straight pool bug, is working hard to improve his straight pool game, and it's paying off. I know, because I found out the hard way.

HobokenAPA and I hooked up for a friendly game of straight pool last night at Amsterdam Billiard Club, as we have on several Fridays of late. HobokenAPA is a player seemingly obsessed with making a very high run, but showed there's a way to win without one.

In a race to 150, SJM ran an early 29 to take a modest lead, but in the middle section of the game, HobokenAPA managed a 25 ball run, a 21 ball run, and then a second 25 ball run, to take a lead of about 115 - 75. SJM, not wanting to be counted out, ran a 36 to pull within four balls, but in the end, HobokenAPA prevailed by 150 - 132, and was a very deserving winner.

Just wanted to afford others on the forum a chance to tell HobokenAPA "well played", just as I did.

sjm must have been off his game.

IIRC sjm ran more than 36 on me practically with his freakin' eyes closed :p

Anyway congrats to HobokenAPA. Welcome to the wonderful world of straight pool.

Thanks SJM. It was a pleasant evening as always, and the standard just seems to get better each week, and that is in no small part to your tutelage.

I am preparing myself for battle with TheOne ...

Phil Cappelle's "Play Your Best Straight Pool" is a highly recommended book.

Best video on straight pool is probably Jim Rempe's "How to Run 100" in which he shares his thoughts and strategies while he runs 100 balls.

I have both of these. Rempe's tape is especially good as you can actually see the thought planning in action. I wonder how many takes it took him to do it? Anybody know?

Sjm just mentioned probably the straight pool instructional materials ever released. Cappelle's book is excellent and Rempe's vids with his own thoughts and comments is priceless. Again SJM hits the jackpot with hit comment

Rempe also has "How to run a rack" which is very good. He starts out wiht different break balls and tells you how to hit them and then proceeds through each rack telling you what he's shooting and why.

Segal has two tapes, Perfect Pool and Runout Pool, which each have good sections on straight pool (along with 8 and 9 ball).

Advanced Pool by George Fels has a good section on straight pool.

There are also three books out there by Johnny Holiday that are on straight pool, The Encyclopedia of Pocket Billiards, Position Play for Hi-Runs, and Continuous Hi-Runs.

Congratulations on a nice game Hoboken. Multiple 20 something runs and SJM coming at you with a 29 and a 36. Good Job.

:)

Hobo,
I was told by someone who was there that it was done FIRST TAKE. Jimmy and Pat mention this on the tape that I have. Jimmy starts to get a bit nervous near the end of the run, thinking he might have to start over, not believing how lucky he was to do it first try.

Succeeding first try is definitely lucky, but remember Jimmy is a straight pool monster. In a long match, I would stake him over any of the young guns (skill is no match for knowledge/skill/experience at playing high pressure 14.1 in competition) - you can pick 'em. If the cloth is slow WE'LL spot THEM.
