Slate Screws

I have a Gold Crown 3, oversized 8, and several of the screws have stripped out from the head (dang slotted heads). I couldn't find any local hardware store that stocked #16 screws with the proper head (though I did find some #16 lag bolts at Ace Hardware).

After doing some research here, I saw a post from Glen that said to drill out the holes with a 1/4" bit, and use 1/4x20x4/12 bolts with locknuts. So I bought them, then drilled out one of the holes. When I slide the bolt in, the head sticks up about 1/8" above the slate (meaning it doesn't flush-mount). I have several extra drill bits that I would use to drill out the slate to create a larger inset for the head, but I was wondering if that is the best way to handle it. Really, I am hoping to get someone's recommendation on how he fixes the flush-mount when drilling out the old screw holes.

I think maybe glen was using machine screws, but I could be wrong....he might pop in and clarify....

And, if you can't find the bolts locally, you will surely be able to find them at McMaster.Carr. They carry just about any type of fastener ever made.

Came across this RKC pic while looking up something else -

One problem I have is that the holes were drilled at an angle. So the head won't fit perfectly into the hole. But I'll go back to the hardware store to see if they have any tapered head screws.

Remove the slate and drill out the screw holes. Then cut and glue 1/4 dowels into the holes. Let dry and you can re drill the holes straight down.

Did the slate screws heads fit? If they did, the machine screw head should also fit. If the slate screw heads did not countersink because of the angle, you need to correct that wether you put slate screws or machine screws back in anyway. Pretty easy to countersink them a little more so the screw head will fit.

I ended up finding the tapered head bolts at Ace (stove bolts, in fact), and they worked great. I did end up lightly drilling out some of the slate so that the head would fully countersink into the slate. The original screws were countersunk flush, so I don't know why the tapered stove bolts didn't countersink fully, but I didn't have to do much to get them to go.

Thanks for the tips.

I love this forum.
